Plan to regulate septic tank lorries

The City Corporation, which continues to receive complaints on poor cleaning and disposal of sewer by septic tank lorries, has made it compulsory for those operating sewer lorries to obtain licence and permission.

Imposition of hefty fine and confiscation of lorries without permits have been planned to regulate private sewer tank operators.

The decision was taken at a meeting attended by health authorities of the civic body a few days ago.

V.P. Thandapani, Commissioner, who presided over the meeting, said that though the Underground Drainage system was in force, just 35 per cent of the households have been connected to the network. Remaining households were still using the septic tank method for disposing of domestic and human waste. The residents invariably have to solicit the service of private sewer operators to clean the tanks. However, complaints have been received that many of the sewer tank lorries dump the domestic waste on open lands inside or outside the Corporation limit. This affects the environment. Hence, it had been decided to regulate them. Anyone engaged in the business of removing and disposing of domestic waste from septic tanks, holding tanks, or other similar sewage treatment or disposal facilities must obtain a septic tank pumping contractor licence.

Mr. Thandapani added that licence-holders should pay Rs.2,000 a year as a fee.

Call to expedite water supply project work

Residents of various hamlets under Corporation Ward 3 were getting annoyed over the delay in commencement of Rs. 3.25 crore drinking water supply enhancement project work, despite the completion of tendering procedures.

Accompanied by ward councillor K. Marappan, the residents met the Corporation officials on Wednesday to raise the said issue along with a few other grievances connected to inadequate drainage and pathetic condition of public toilet complex in the area.

Mr. Marappan later told reporters that the officials had assured to take steps to proceed with the water supply project.

According to the residents, the public toilet complex situated at Adi Dravidar Colony in Chettipalayam has been lying in a pathetic condition. “Due to this, people defecate in the open,” they told the Corporation officials.

Another demand was the need to augment the supply of water through the second drinking water scheme.

Coimbatore to be considered for smart city project:Venkaiah Naidu

The Central Government will consider Coimbatore when it prepares the list of cities to implement the smart city project, Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, M. Venkaiah Naidu has said.

Speaking at the ‘Meet and Greet’ programme organised at the PSG College of Technology here on Sunday, he said that the Union Government was preparing the contours of the smart cities project, which it will implement by taking into confidence the State Governments and the urban local bodies.

Smart cities meant smart leadership, smart administration, smart governance, transparent decision making process and accountability. The Government had received offers of partnership from Japan, Australia, Dubai and a few other places to develop smart cities. It would consider all suggestions, study different models from across the globe and do what was right.

It had planned to develop heritage cities for which it had chosen Velankanni and Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. It has also decided to rejuvenate 500 cities and towns by upgrading drinking water supply, improving sewerage system and providing other basic facilities.

In short, the Government was working on a new urban development mission as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Development Mission had come to an end by March 2014.

As part of the mission, the Government also planned to provide housing to the people from the economically weaker sections. The target for completing the project had been fixed at 2019.

He called upon the industries to join the government in nation development and also in local governance.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Naidu inaugurated the administrative building at the PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research. Speaking at the inauguration, he wanted the private sector to join hands in providing education to the unlettered. The Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons Charities, L. Gopalakrishnan spoke on the occasion.
