Krishna water arrives in city

Krishna water, considered a lifeline to maintain the water supply for Chennai, reached the city on Tuesday morning.

Water released from Kandaleru reservoir, Andhra Pradesh, on August 1 reached Uthukottai at the Tamil Nadu border at 6 a.m., after travelling over 150 km of Kandaleru Poondi canal. By evening, it travelled another 25 km to reach Poondi reservoir, where it will be stored and distributed to the city.

The entry point received about 190 cubic feet per second. “We expect to get 300 cusecs this week, which is enough to fulfil the city’s drinking water needs. If we get 500 cusecs daily, we can store 1,200 mcft (million cubic feet) monthly, and that is adequate to supply water for more than a month,” said an official of the Water Resources Department.

As storage in city reservoirs hit a low of 1,800 mcft, just enough to sustain water supply for two months, Krishna water was the last resort to avoid a severe shortage.

Officials of Chennai Metrowater said they would start transferring the water to Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs for supply to the city. Nearly two-thirds of the supply now comes from Veeranam tank and desalination plants.

By Tuesday evening, it reached Poondi reservoir, where it will be stored and distributed to city.

Councillors seek expansion of Salem corporation limits

SALEM: All councillors, including deputy mayor M Natesan, appealed to the Salem City Municipal Corporation mayor to expand corporation limits based on population as well as to develop the city further. "There are 60 wards in the corporation and they have to be bifurcated based on population density as many small wards have more population than the bigger wards. So we request the mayor to send a detailed proposal to the state government to break the bigger wards," Natesan said. Mayor S Soundappan who heard the councillors' request said that he would send a detailed proposal seeking government's nod in this issue.

SCMC's monthly meeting was held at hanging garden in the city on Thursday. Mayor Soundappan headed the meeting while corporation commissioner K R Selvaraj welcomed the gathering. Zonal presidents T Thiyagarajan (Suramangalam), K Madeshwaran (Hasthampatti), V Jayaprakash (Ammapet) and M Shanmugam (Kondalampatti) accused officials of not informing zonal presidents while conducting mass cleaning drives in the wards. "The officials have been conducting meetings on their own. They do not discuss anything with zonal presidents or the ward councillors concerned. They do not inform us about any mass cleaning programme," they said. Commissioner Selvaraj said that he would ask all officials to keep councillors and zonal presidents informed in future.

"Most SCMC officials put on record that cleaning programme has been carried out without actually doing anything. So we want to check each record related to that scheme," they said the commissioner agreed to produce the records.

Opposition party leader Buvaneswari Murali complained of water logging and the mayor assured of taking action. Hasthampatti zonal president Matheswaran sought new roads to be built in areas where underground drainage work have been carried out. In the meeting the mayor expressed hope of developing Salem city further with the help of grants from the central as well as state government.
