At last, Thyagaraya Road in T. Nagar looks like a six-lane stretch.

After the relocation of roadside vendors, the road that stretches from Panagal Park to Anna Salai-Teynampet junction looks broad and wide. Traffic markings indicate that it indeed is a six-lane road but for years, it remained clogged as vendors had occupied a part of the road, mainly the Pondy Bazaar stretch.

Now, the vendors are slowly moving into the shopping complex built by the Chennai Corporation. On Sunday, all shops on the first floor were open. On the other floors, only a few shops were open. Despite the relocation however, there is the possibility that some of the hawkers could go back to the road.

Already, half-a-dozen shops sell their wares from outside the complex despite being allotted space inside. Hawkers in the complex allege that some shops have been sub-let. However, Mohammed Hakim, secretary of Rajiv Gandhi Footpath Shops Association that represents footpath shops on Usman Road, said all shops allotted to them have been taken.

“I have a shop on the second floor and sell belts and footwear. Some of them don’t have the money to establish their shops and are taking time setting them up,” he explained. According to Mr. Hakim, all persons who have been allotted space will move in within two months and the rest of the hawkers must approach the government and seek relocation.

Shopkeepers say they are yet to form an association but on each floor, the occupants have appointed a person to sweep and mop the floors every day. “We collect a small amount every month towards maintenance of our space,” said S. Syed Ibrahim, who sells curtains.

The T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association members, however, are still sceptical. “We are fed up with the government and police inaction. We are worried that the expansion plan for the Usman Road flyover will result in more hawkers,” said K. Swaminathan, a resident of Usman Road.

Amma canteens in city awarded ISO for hygienic practices

MADURAI: Amma Canteens, one of the flagship schemes of the AIADMK government aimed at providing low-cost food to the public, has bagged ISO ( International Organisation for Standardization) certification in Madurai.

Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa said that four Amma Canteens run by the Madurai Corporation have bagged the ISO certification for the first time ever since the eateries were established across the state.

"The certificates were awarded for hygienic food preparation and serving practices," Rajan Chellappa said. The certificates were awarded for the canteens at K Pudur, Santhaipettai, Tiruparankunram and Melavasal on February 4.

These canteens were started, along with six others, in key localities of the city in June last year soon after Jayalalithaa made an announcement. The canteens outsourced to SHGs were an instant hit in Madurai and crowd thronged the outlets everyday. The 300 plates of sambar rice, curd rice and idlis sold like hot cakes. While low-cost food was the salient feature of the canteens, the dishes also satisfied the taste buds of the public. The corporation had planned to open 90 more canteens - one each in every ward - but had to go slow on the project due to funds crunch. The civic body had to incur Rs 27 lakh expenditure for each of the canteens every year. The net loss from the 10 canteens was estimated at Rs 3.9 crore as the returns from sale would be only Rs 1.29 crore as against the investment and recurring expenditure of Rs 5.2 crore.

"We have so far spent Rs 2.4 crore so far for the 10 canteens," Chellappa said.

In addition to the canteens, Chellappa said that Eco Park, the lung space in the heart of the city, the swimming pool near Gandhi Museum, the integrated bus terminus at Mattuthavani have also been granted ISO certification. "In all Madurai corporation has bagged seven ISO awards, a record of sorts," Chellappa said.

He said that efforts would be taken to obtain ISO certificate for the remaining canteens also.

Coimbatore master plan to be delayed by two months

COIMBATORE: The wait for Coimbatore Master Plan is expected to be delayed by another two months as the Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping exercise to determine the existing land use patterns will not be completed by the February 28 deadline.

The 18 member team of volunteers from Centre for Geographical Information Technologies (CGIT), Bharathidasan University in Trichy, are presently engaged in mapping out the existing land use patterns in the district. The draft land use pattern is now expected to be submitted by the end of March.

"Our team has already covered the rural areas and have returned from Coimbatore on February 2. Now there will be two more phases of the exercise each lasting about 12 to 14 days in which the remaining areas are expected to be covered in urban Coimbatore," said S Vasudevan, coordinator, Centre for Geographical Information Systems.

The exercise will be carried out by a two member team of specially trained team people and each team will be entrusted with a vehicle. The Directorate of Town and Country Planning has categorised land use patterns into 108 sections each detailing a specific purpose. The teams will be handed out 1:2000 scaled grid maps which will cover 1.5km area on the east and west directions and one km in north and south directions. The vehicle used by the team will be directly monitored on real time basis from the CGIT centre as part of the internal monitoring exercise.

"The existing land use patterns are being digitally mapped for cross verification purpose. We are waiting for the exercise to get completed," said LPA sources. The mapping exercise is based on tracking the latitudinal and longitudinal position and to classify how the specific plot is being used at the moment. The state government had entrusted the GIS mapping work for Hosur in Krishnagiri district, Trichy, Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirupur, Erode and Coimbatore.

"We have divided Coimbatore into 1100 rural and 1800 urban grids. We expect to complete the process by March 31. We are planning to submit the draft mapping report to the Directorate of Town and Country Planning for Hosur in the coming week," Vasudevan added

Coimbatore residents have been waiting for the final master plan and had even submitted more than 3000 suggestions and modifications, most pertaining to the land use pattern in the district. It is expected that the master plan for Coimbatore will be finalised a couple of months after the general elections.
