Encroachers Seek Time for Relocation

The plan of demolishing two commercial establishments including a gymnasium and a part of a marriage hall was dropped on Thursday, after the owners of buildings assured they would clear the encroachments by January 20.

Town planning officer M Kannan said the building owners were asked to remove the encroachments last week, but they had not complied.

On Thursday, the team visited the Thorapadi Jail Road area again to clear the encroachments hindering the proposed canal restoration work here. The canal, which was a branch of the Nicholson Canal passed from Otteri to Sadhupperi via Palavansathukuppam and Thorapadi. The restoration work between Otteri and Palavansathukuppam had already been carried out, Kannan said.

The power connection was already suspended and the eviction drive will be conducted on January 21, if the encroachments were not cleared by the owners.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday gave the  administrative sanction for constructing 1,472 multi-storey tenements at a cost of  `117.15 crore through the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) for resettling the hutment dwellers living in Ward No 96 of Chennai Corporation (Kakkanji Nagar). 

Of the 1,472 tenements, 1,056 will come up under the Ambattur Athipattu-I project at a cost of Rs 84.92 crore, while 416 tenements will be constructed under the Ambattur Athipattu-II project at a cost of `32.23 crore.

The CM also sanctioned `31.5 crore and `11.63 crore respectively for Athipattu-I and Athipattu-II projects as the State government’s grant.  Each of the tenements will be built on an area of 271 sq ft with two rooms, a kitchen, balcony and a toilet.

The Chief Minister had already directed the authorities to take up repair works in the TNSCB tenements constructed many years ago to ensure safe dwelling of the poor.  For the current year (2013-14) and the next financial year, the Chief Minister has allocated`25.77 crore for undertaking repair works. With these funds, repair works will be carried out in 29,028 tenements.

As many as 15,656 multi-storey tenements have been constructed in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam as part of the Kannagi Nagar Project, for resettlement of hutment dwellers residing in objectionable areas in Chennai city.  Further, 8,048 tenements are being constructed in the same place.

Since the density of population has gone up in this area due to resettlement of people, transport facilities should be upgraded for these people.  The Chief Minister has sanctioned `2 crore towards upgrading the Kannagi Nagar bus terminus with more bus bays to park 20 buses and other amenities.

Rs 117 crore for slum rehab projects

Chennai: Chief minister Jaya­lali­thaa has sanctioned a sum of Rs 117.15 crore for the Sl­um Clearance Board tow­ards construction of 1,472 homes for rehabilitation of slum-dwellers and other poor families residing at Kakanji Nagar in ward 96 of the Chennai corporati­on, a release said.

The multi-storeyed tenements will be constructed on the outskirts of the city at Athipattu near Amb­attur.  The project has also received an additional Rs  42.68 crore as part of the state government fund. “The individual homes will have a total area of 271 square feet with two rooms, a kitchen, balcony and a toilet area,” slum cl­e­arance board officials said in a release.

The Slum Clearance Board is also engaged in the construction of an ad­ditional 8,048 multi-sto­reyed homes at Kan­nagi Nagar near Okkiyam Tho­ra­ipakkam in addition to the existing 15,656 homes already constructed at the site and have been handed over to the poor and roadside dwellers from across the city.

The ambitious Kannagi Nagar project had been taken to clear illegal roadside tenements across the city and thousands of families who lived in huts and roadside tenements were gradually moved to the new homes built at Kannagi Nagar, the release added.

Due to the sudden surge in population due to the relocation of slum dwe­llers from across the city, the state government has taken adequate measures to ensure that these people have enough transport facilities to commute to the city for work.

“Hence, the existing bus terminus in Kannagi Na­gar is being expanded to accommodate the parking of 20 buses. An administrative office and a time keeper’s office will also be set up soon. The chief minister has allocated Rs 2 crore towards the expansion of the bus terminus,” state officials said in a release.
