Rs. 1.17-crore project taken up under Special Centenary Funds

The new bus stand improvement works taken up by the Pudukottai Municipality at an outlay of Rs. 1.17 crore through the special centenary funds sanctioned by the Chief Minister are expected to be completed in the next three months.

The work of laying concrete platforms and bays has commenced and the bus stand will be an all-concrete-road one. The drainage channels around the bus stand would be cleared, and construction of new toilet blocks forms part of the project.

Apart from the special centenary funds, the municipality would allocate Rs. 25 lakh from its general funds for the maintenance of buildings at the bus stand, said S.A.S.Sait alias Abdul Rahman, Municipal Chairman (in-charge).

G.Arumugam, councillor of Congress party, raised the issue of limited number of bus bays (49) at the municipal council meeting held here on Monday. Adding two more bays would upgrade the status of the bus stand into ‘A’ grade which would pave way for increasing the revenue through hike in toll fee from buses being operated at or through the bus stand, he said. Mr.Sait said that two additional bays have already been constructed.

The municipality had also planned to expand the new bus stand which currently operates in an area of 4.99 acres. The proposal was to takeover the nearby Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation depot along with its approach road. The municipality has sought the district administration’s assistance in getting the depot land. The Collector, in turn, wrote to the TNSTC and transport department officials in Chennai for transfer of land.

The Collector also assured 10 acres land in Machuvadi area in the town in lieu of the depot land and a site was also identified. The proposal is still under the consideration of TNSTC, Mr. Sait said.

Referring to the functioning of the temporary bus stand on the sprawling ground on Dheerar Sathyamoorthy Salai, he said.

Extended areas of city to get new grid system of roads

Chennai Corporation is set to issue the work order for developing a grid system of roads in the extended areas of the city that are lacking good road facilities.

Under grid-III of the State-funded Integrated Grid Development programme, roads are proposed to be laid in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur and Perungudi at a total cost of around Rs. 400 crore. In these road works, which are part of the mega city development plan, other civic facilities including stormwater drain, cable duct, stainless steel name boards and street lights, too will be integrated.

A senior official of the civic body said that already works under grid-I covering Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur had been completed at a cost of Rs. 380 crore, and works under grid-II costing Rs. 350 crore had been executed in all 15 zones. He added that Sholinganallur, part of the Corporation, had been excluded from grid-III of the programme as Chennai Metro Water Supply and the sewerage board was yet to complete the water pipeline work there.

The civic official pointed out that normally road work would involve relaying damaged roads, but this programme involved a comprehensive system including provision for cable ducts on one side, cable cross ducts and paved footpaths.

The advantage of this system was that there would not be any need for road cuts due to the provision for cable cross ducts, and the roads would last longer, he added.

300 schools get access to green centre

Asha Sridhar

An environmental information dissemination centre (EIDC), a central resource centre for school students, has been opened for students and teachers from schools that are a part of the National Green Crops (NGC).

The centre, which has been set up at a Chennai Corporation Middle School in Choolai, is the first EIDC in the city, and has already been set up in 10 districts during the previous academic year by the department of environment, said the centre in-charge and NGC district co-ordinator, G.Thangaraj.

“It is a centre where students and teachers from NGC schools in the city can learn about environment-related topics such as pollution and energy conservation,” he said. There are around 300 such schools in the city.

Teachers to be trained

The centre has a resource room — with books, multimedia and a television — that can house up to 60 people. It also has a lab where teachers will be trained to use soil, water and air testing kits.

“The trained teachers will in turn teach the students and NGC schools will be given one set each,” he said, adding that they had already trained 50 teachers.

The centre will be open to Chennai Corporation, government, government-aided and private schools that are part of NGC.

Joseph Patrick, an NGC co-ordinator at a government-aided school, said the centre can be a common meeting ground for environment-related activities for school students.

Mr. Thangaraj said the centre would be used to conduct training and seminars and students could be brought there in turns.

Compost pit, medicinal garden, next

They are also planning to display models on rainwater harvesting, and set up a vermi-compost pit and medicinal plant garden on the premises. The centre is stocked with a set of telefilms and books given by the department of environment and ministry of environment and forests.

Some NGOs are also involved in the centre, said Mr. Thangaraj. He said it would be fully functional by the next academic year.

The centre was inaugurated in December 2013, by the director of environment H. Malleshappa in the presence of other officials, said Mr. Thangaraj.
