Construction of IHHL has gained momentum in Tiruchi, says Collector

All village panchayats in Tiruchi district will be declared open defecation-free (ODF) by December 31, according to Collector K. Rajamani.

Speaking at a function organised by Association of Voluntary Organisations here on Saturday, he said that construction of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) in village panchayats had gained momentum. Out of 404 village panchayats, construction of individual household toilets in all houses of 301 panchayats had already been completed. The DRDA officials were instructed to expedite the process of constructing toilets in all pending villages. The progress of works was being closely monitored.

“Tiruchi district is a pioneer in construction of toilets in rural households. The day is not far away in declaring Tiruchi district is open defecation-free,” Mr. Rajamani said. Stating that Tiruchi city had figured in the top 10 cleanest cities across the country for three years consecutively, he said a number of steps had been initiated to improve the ranking in 2018. All citizens of the city should cooperate with the civic body to improve its ranking. Tiruchi City Corporation had already banned plastic sale, which was affecting the environment.

Complimenting the Non-Governmental Organizations in Tiruchi district on creating awareness among the people on open defecation, Mr. Rajamani said their role in solid waste management could not be underestimated.

K. Meena, former vice-chancellor, Bharathidasan University, said that the NGOs would have to play a key role in creating awareness among the public on various aspects of life.

“Sevai” Govindaraj, “Scope” Subburaman, M.A. Aleem, former vice-principal, K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College, Tiruchi and others spoke.

Earlier, Mr. Rajamani presented a medal on behalf of Association of Voluntary Agencies to S. Sakul Hameed, Executive Officer, Ponnampatti Town Panchayat, as a token of appreciation for bagging best town panchayat award in the State for best practices in solid waste management.

Corporation’s camps to clear approvals

To be held on December 1 and 4

The Corporation organises special camps to clear the applications for property tax name change, paying vacant land tax, underground drainage connection, building plan approval etc. for Palayamkottai and Melapalayam zones on December 1 and 4.

In a statement, City Engineer and Commissioner (In-Charge) V. Narayanan Nair said the special camp at Palayamkottai would be held on December 1 between 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. while camp for Melapalayam Zone organised on December 4 in similar timing. Both the camps will be organised in respective zone offices.

Moreover, special counters had been created to receive the taxes payable to the Corporation, he said.

It has a reverse osmosis drinking water plant too

The Salem Corporation moved to a spacious three-flour new office in the city on Monday.

The new office has come up at an outlay of Rs. 13 crore, and has an underground car parking facility.

The Salem Municipal Council was formed in 1866 and it was upgraded into Corporation in 1994 and since then it continued to function in the old building near the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital.

With city limits getting extended, more officials and staff were pressed into service, leading to space crunch in all the departments in the existing building. Following this, the corporation sought permission from the State Government for the construction of a new office.

The late Jayalalithaa laid foundation stone for the construction of new office through video conferencing on December 30, 2013.

The government sanctioned Rs. 5 crore under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund in 2012-13 and the corporation chipped in Rs. 2 crore.

The work on the construction of the basement, ground floor and the first floor was completed in two years.

The corporation once again submitted proposal for the construction of second and third floor, following which the government again sanctioned Rs. 5.13 crore under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund 2015-16.

The Chief Minister declared open the new office during the MGR birth centenary celebrations in the city on September 30 this year.

According to corporation sources, the ground floor has been allotted for the offices of different departments, while the offices of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, council hall will function on the first floor. The Commissioner’s room is situated on the second floor, apart from the gallery for the general public to view the proceedings of the council meetings and press gallery. The third floor will too have different departments.

A reverse osmosis drinking water has also been commissioned.

The work of shifting the offices commenced on Thursday and the new corporation office started functioning from the new premises in a full-fledged manner from Monday.

The Salem Corporation accounted for a population of 8.26 lakh and 60 wards spread over in four zones – Suramangalam, Hasthampatti, Ammapet and Kondalampatti.
