The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, Government of Tamil Nadu, has asked the Coimbatore Corporation to prepare a detailed project report to improve and develop the Kurichi Tank.

According to sources, the Corporation would engage a consultant to prepare the report. The Commissionerate would pay for engaging the consultant and also implement the project the consultant recommended.

The scope of the detailed project work would include improving the storage capacity of the tank, strengthening its bund, beautifying the tank area, cleaning its inlet channels, treating the domestic sewage that entered the tank, and providing foot paths, lighting, public convenience facilities and much more.

The sources said that the Commissionerate would provide the funding under the Integrated Urban Development Mission scheme.

The move to ask the Corporation to prepare the detailed project report and take up works based on suggestions therein came within days of the Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, K. Phanindra Reddy, visiting the place on Thursday, during his visit to Coimbatore to participate in a conference.

The Coimbatore Corporation has already got eight tanks under its control. It had taken over the tanks on a 99-year lease in 2010 from the Public Works Department for development under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

It took over the tanks for development to fulfil obligations under the JNNURM, which mandated the beneficiary local bodies to be in possession of the assets they intended to develop.

But nothing much happened thereafter. The Central Government was yet to sanction funds for the Corporation’s proposal to develop the tanks. The demand was for Rs. 150 crore.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department had sent a letter to the Coimbatore Corporation asking why it should not revert the control of the tanks, as no development had taken place.

Plans for contest on Anna University campus in Chennai

With the idea of improving urban governance in the State, the office of the commissioner of municipal administration has decided to seek ideas from IT professionals.

It has planned to hold a contest on the Anna University campus on December 14 and 15. Inputs from the professionals will be utilised to develop e-governance applications for 126 municipalities and nine municipal corporations (barring Chennai), in areas such as civic services, urban sanitation and hygiene, solid waste management, health, education and the internal working of urban local bodies.

Called ‘Hackathon,’ the contest is expected to see participation of ‘hundreds of IT professionals,’ according to Chandrakanth Kamble, commissioner of municipal administration.

A jury comprising academicians of Anna University and seasoned civil servants will choose the best ideas, for which prizes will be given on the second day of the event.

Mr. Kamble told reporters on Friday that given the increasing use of mobile phones and advancements in mobile phone technology, the proposed applications would be integrated with the existing framework of delivery of services, so citizens could avail of services in a simplified manner on an anytime-anywhere basis.

It had been proposed to take up a comprehensive e-governance project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, for which bids had been floated. After executing pilot projects in one municipality and one municipal corporation, the project was likely to be rolled out within six to nine months.

Mr. Kamble said 200 persons had enrolled themselves for the event, so far. Those interested can register on http://www.thoughtworks.com/events/cma-hac kathon-code-governance.

Chennai Corporation to conduct cycle rally on Sunday

CHENNAI: In an attempt to promote non-motorized transport, the Chennai Corporation will conduct a cycle rally in the city on Sunday.

The rally, organized by the corporation along with Institute for Transportation & Development Policy and Tamil Nadu Cycling Club, will start from Island Grounds at 7am and end at Madhya Kailash. The rally is open to the all people who can join the event with their own bicycle.

On Friday, the civic body conducted a workshop with its engineers, NGOs, architects, disability rights groups and traffic police to improve infrastructure and services for pedestrians and cyclists.

Speaking at the event, corporation commissioner Vikram Kapur said the share of non-motorised transport and public transport should reach 70% every day. "The aim of having a non-motorised transport policy is for transit of people and not transit of vehicles" he said.

Caroline Samponaro, senior director of Campaigns and Organizing at Transportation Alternatives, said that 80% of public spaces in New York City were dedicated to bus lanes, cycle tracks and footpaths. "The elected and appointed leaders of the city have to collaborate with NGOs and general public to transform the city," she said. Several groups of car users had initially opposed the changes, but eventually the initiatives won widespread support, she added.

The participants discussed planning of non-motorised transport at places like T Nagar. They also evaluated the 71 pedestrian friendly footpaths in the city.
