30 percent Buildings Yet to Instal RWH Structures in Vellore City

More than 30,000 buildings in Vellore city are yet to install rainwater harvesting structures (RWH).

The Vellore Corporation had intensified the implementation of the rainwater harvesting structures system in the city since June 2013. Door-to-door checks, seminars, meetings, mobile campaigns and awareness rallies were held in the city, advising the general public to construct RWH structures in all buildings.

Corporation town planning officer M Kannan said, “There are a total of 93,504 buildings, including residential and commercial ones, in the city. Of this, as many as 63,189 buildings had RWH structures. This constitutes 64.14 per cent of the total buildings in the city.”

However, Kannan he said that the drive had been intensified again to ensure that all buildings install rainwater harvesting structures.

Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said that several steps had been taken by the Corporation  to ensure the installation of rainwater harvesting structures system in the buildings in the city, ahead of the rains. After the RWH systems were installed, the Corporation posted stickers to identify the buildings. This helped officials monitor implementation of the programme, she added.

The Department of Municipal Administration has proposed to outsource the maintenance of streetlights in Thanjavur region, comprising Tiruchirapalli City Corporation and 19 municipalities spread over the districts of Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, and Ariyalur.

The project focuses on energy saving strategy and prompt maintenance of streetlights, besides minimising complaints by members of the public. Under this project, all the conventional tube lights would be replaced with LED lamps, which would reduce the usage of electricity by streetlights and reduce the energy bill for the local bodies. The department finalised a private company for this project and tender had been finalised. Sources said the department expected 35 per cent saving in energy because of the usage of LED bulbs.

Plastic Roads Shortly in Vellore Corporation limits

Vellore Corporation has planned to use plastic waste for laying roads in the city, for which a fund of `1 crore was allotted.

The officials of the local body had been conducting several checks and raids in markets against the usage of poor quality plastic items such as carry bags, plates, tumblers, etc.

According to the officials of the Corporation, around 2 tonnes of poor quality plastic products were seized in the last three months, after the local body received an approval from the district administration to fine the public and traders using plastic quality which was less than 40 microns.

They said the seized plastic products along with the plastic waste segregated from the door-to-door collection would be used for laying roads. The officials also added that checks against the usage of poor plastics will continue in the coming days.

The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration had given its nod to to the Corporation to utilise these plastic material for laying roads.

The Corporation would meet the additional expenditure for laying the plastic roads from its general fund.
