Vellore corporation to take over Anna Kalai Arangam

Vellore Corporation would soon take over the Anna Kalaiarangam building run by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). Officials said the building would  serve as a permanent asset for the local body.

Mayor P Karthiyayini said, “Since the place was located in the heart of the city, the local body planned to utilise it for commercial purposes to increase the revenue of the Vellore Corporation.”

She said a letter was received from the secretary of Tamil Development and Information on November 1 this year permitting the Vellore Corporation to take over the building without any cost. The letter also noted that the State government did not have any liability over the asset and the lease period of the shops put up in front of the building had also expired. The letter also permitted the local body to make changes in the building structures.

Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said a resolution was passed in this connection at the Corporation council meet on November 21, 2013.

Janaki added that obtaining a place situated in the heart of the city without any cost was not only an asset to the local body, but would also serve as security against loan sanction by other government bodies and financing agencies, to execute various development works in the city.

Anna Kalaiarangam is said to be the only cinema hall run by the State government in Tamil Nadu. The DIPR has been maintaining this 500-seat capacity theatre ever since the State government took it over from its previous owner, Thimmaiah, of Mysore in 1968.

Since then, the Department has been screeningdocumentary films and children’s films during the Children’s Film Festivals apart from renting it out to the schools and private parties to conduct magic shows and exhibitions.

Government programmes and many cultural and folk performances by the Department of Tamil Development and Information are also being conducted.

New microphones for women members in corporation council hall

New mikes were installed at all seats in the corporation council meeting room, bringing relief to women councillors who usually had a difficult time raising their voices to be heard.

Councillors, especially women, had raised concerns over the lack of sufficient mikes in the Corporation council meeting hall.

Women councillors of all parties had been complaining that they could not air their grievances effectively at meetings because of the screaming by other members, including the men councillors.

Councillor of ward 40, A Suganthi said,“Mayor P Karthiyayini had introduced a system of listening to all the councillors from ward 1 to 60, in an order. However, this took more time to end the meetings. So, the councillors went back to speaking at random, forcing women councillors to scream.”

“We were hardly audible in the meetings,” Suganthi said, and added that they used to represent their grievances in writing.

Corporation Engineer Baskaran said the local body had spent `3.5 lakh for the new microphones with stands, sound mixing box, speakers and a new carpet for the meeting hall.

Buckingham Canal work to extend till March

The Chennai Corporation has set new deadlines for the completion of work on the extension of the north and south parts of the Buckingham Canal. During the Corporation Council Meet held recently, it was informed that the the work on the canal, which was supposed to be extended by 350 metres on both parts, had not been completed yet, and would be completed within March next year.

Replying to a letter of request submitted by councillor of Ward 38, Santhanam, the Council on Friday passed two resolutions, fixing the new deadlines for completion of the work. It was informed that the extension project faced several hurdles and this had caused the delay in the work to stagnate. Problems such as presence of Metro Water pipelines, EB lines and roads in the proposed extension routes hampered the process. There was also restriction laid down by the traffic police, who allowed the work to be done only during the night.

It was further informed that while 250 metres of the proposed 350 metres extension had been completed in the southern part of the canal, work on the remaining 100 metres could not be completed because of the presence of high tension cables in the area. Hence, an extended deadline of March 31, 2014 has been given for work on the south end. However, the new deadline for the work on the northern parts of the canal have been set for December 31, 2013.
