Mysore City Corporation gives nod to build four more swimming pools

MYSORE: If Mysore City Corporation has its way, the city will get four more swimming pools.

The civic body on Friday approved a proposal to construct four swimming pools in different parts of the city. While the proposal to build pools in Narasimharaja Mohalla, Vijayanagar and Devaraja Mohalla was passed without much discussion, the one proposed at Puttaraj Gawai stadium in JP Nagar on build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis triggered opposition.

The ruling JD(S)-BJP combine cut a sorry figure when mayor N M Rajeshwari said that she was not informed about the subject being included in the agenda for the monthly meeting of the council. Grabbing the opportunity, the opposition Congress questioned the motive and accused the ruling parties of hurrying it through. However, B L Bhyrappa, who represents JP Nagar, said that that the work, estimated to cost Rs 90 lakh, is proposed to be financed by private entity, given that the MCC lacks funds.

The members sought to know if private entities would adhere to MCC's directives. They also questioned as to why MCC didn't invite interest of expression for the project. After clarification from the ruling combine, the council approved it. Rajeshwari said that she will write to the government seeking funds for the project. In case they don't come through, the project can be taken up on BOOT basis, she ruled.

During the meeting, the members complained that a prime site on upscale Kalidasa Road, allotted by the MCC to promote khadi, is being misused. They asked the MCC to withdraw the approval and get back the 20x10 sqft plot. The members said that the officials should focus on protecting public properties. They asked the officials to upgrade the records, arguing that anti-social elements are trying to grab prime properties.

The meeting also discussed the projects to be taken up with Rs 100 crore special grants from CM Siddaramaiah, which were allocated in the budget. The MCC has not finalized the projects, the members said, charging the officials with being lax.

250 new properties found evading property tax

Kolhapur: The civic body has found 250 new property owners to be evading taxes. They have not registered with the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation's property tax department.

The drive against property tax defaulters was started in December last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. The contract for assessing properties has been given to Surve Infotech - a city based IT Enabled Service providing company.

The company's director Shantaram Surve said, "The drive is being conducted to bring properties under the ambit of the property tax department and increase the civic body's revenue."

The civic administration is going to issue notices to the owners of the 250 properties and ask them to pay their taxes for the period since construction. The database of properties registered earlier with the department has now been provided to the company. It is now conducting its scrutiny by comparing tax receipts with the property sizes.

In a first phase of the assessment, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation has identified 250 new properties which are not registered with the property tax department and are found evading the tax.

The drive was started in December last year and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The contract for assessment of the properties has been given to Surve Infotech- a city based IT Enabled Service providing company.

Shantaram Surve, director of the company said, "We have found 250 new properties the owners of which do not have any receipts for the payment of the property tax. The drive will help to find out such properties and the civic administration will bring them under the ambit of the property tax which will increase its revenue."

The civic administration is going to issue the notices to the owners of these properties and will appeal them to pay the tax for the period since the construction is completed. The earlier database of the properties which are registered with the department have been provided to the company which is now scrutinizing all the properties by cross checking the property tax receipts and the size of the property.

According to the database, there are around 1.25 lakh properties in the city which are registered with the department. "Along with finding new properties we are also scrutinizing the registered ones and therefore to cover all these properties, it will take time of about a year. The last such census of properties was conducted a couple of years ago," added Surve.

According to the civic administration, the data generated from the drive will help them to map the city digitally. The system will have the details such as identification number of the every household, detailed address of the property and the owners name, utility connections, and size of the property on the basis of number of floors, built-up and carpet area.

MCG seeks nod to recognize small plots

GURGAON: The MCG has sent a proposal to the state government seeking permission to sanction building plans of plots that are smaller than 85 square metres.

Citing the example of Delhi, where civic corporations are allowed to sanction building plans of plots as small as 32 square metres, the MCG said the move could bring relief for hundreds of residents who at present are not able to carry out constructions on smaller plots.

The civic authorities, however, clarified that if the proposal is accepted, it will only benefit those living in regularized colonies across the city. "This proposal is not meant for those who have plots smaller than 85 square metres in unauthorized colonies," said Praveen Kumar, MCG commissioner.

"It is absurd that we are not allowed to sanction building plans of plots smaller than 85 square metres. It's unfair that despite having land in authorized colonies, many residents are not able to construct houses," the commissioner added.
