Mysore City Corporation (MCC) officials, on Wednesday, cleared 31 unauthorised shops in the vicinity of the office of regional transport office (RTO, East) on Dr Rajkumar road, in Shakti Nagar, on the outskirts of the city.

This follows a complaint by the residents of the locality to the office of Lokayukta, alleging that the petty shops that had mushroomed after the said office was opened two years ago, had turned into a bane. Most of the shops were catering to the public visiting the RTO with stationery materials and food items.

Earlier, MCC officials had served notices on such shopkeepers, asking them to vacate. On Monday (January 20) too, a final notice was served, after which some of the shopkepers vacated on their own volition, with 31 shops still remaining. Mobile shop vendors were spared as they move away with their push carts after the day’s business. On Wednesday morning, around 8 am, earth moving machines of the MCC and gangmen were pressed into service to complete the clearance drive without any confusion.

Board owes Rs. 32.61 crore to HMWSSB

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has finally agreed to make part payment of Rs. 2 crore out of the Rs. 32.61 crore accumulated arrears payable to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). Of the Rs.32.61 crore, Rs. 24 crore was outstanding dues and the rest is interest on the same amount.

It has also decided to pay Rs. 4.33 crore connection charges towards water supply from Hasmathpet and Gunrock Village pump houses. The SCB needs to pay another Rs. 9.73 crore for commencement of water supply of eight lakh gallons per day from Karkhana reservoir.

The HMWSSB has recently demanded that the SCB pay Rs.32.61 crore within six months promising to freeze the amount without levying further interest on the existing arrears.

At a special board meeting on Wednesday, members observed that clearing such a huge amount within six months was tough and agreed to make part payment.

“It was decided to request the HMWSSB to permit six months for paying the rest of the dues,” said SCB Chief Executive Officer Sujatha Gupta. HMWSSB is presently collecting about Rs.1.27 crore as monthly bill from SCB charging Rs.13.50 per kilolitre.

A request is being made to the government to offer concession for water supplied to slums, she said. SCB is allotting unique consumer numbers to all consumers and install water meters. About 5,000 water meters are to be installed in Bolarum shortly as a pilot project, she explained.

PFA sterilises dogs caught by Corporation

Staff Reporter

Animal welfare group People for Animals (PFA) is sterilising stray dogs caught by the city Corporation for the time being.

The recent incident in which a girl was attacked by a stray dog at her school in Poonthura had prompted the Corporation to employ two dogcatchers.

But the civic body has only one veterinarian to sterilise dogs.

The Corporation had floated tenders for doctors and organisations to spearhead a mass sterilisation campaign. So far, PFA had sterilised 30 dogs and the frequency of their puppy adoption drives had increased.

The forum had submitted a proposal to the Corporation to provide medicines and surgical equipment. The dogs were sterilised at a rescue centre at Valiyarthala. Since PFA had only one veterinarian, they approached the World Wide Veterinary Service (WWVS)’s International Training Centre at Ooty, PFA Manager N. Solairajan said.

“An Animal Husbandry Department official said that more doctors could be sanctioned for the Corporation only if the civic body sends a request. When we spoke to Mayor K. Chandrika, she said applications had been sent before. We approached WWVS to avoid delay in getting trained staff,” he added.

They were summoned by the Prisons Department to carry out a sterilisation programme at the Nettukaltheri Open Jail, near Neyyar Dam. Since the prison was being audited, the project had been put on hold for now.
