Sector 17 to get new parking lot

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation plans to construct a new parking lot in Sector 17, stretching from the MC office to Hotel Shivalikview. To be built at a cost of Rs 34 lakh, the agenda for the parking lot would be taken up for discussion in the meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee to be held later this month.

The idea for the parking lot was mooted as the the lot inside the civic body premises is often packed with vehicles, leaving little space for the MC staff. It has been observed that visitors to Sector 17 park inside the MC premises to avoid parking fee.

A number of councillors have complained that every time they come to the MC office for the House Meet, they find it hard to find a place to park their vehicles.

An official of the MC said the new parking would be on the lines of the lot built on the stretch from the UT Secretariat to the Education department office in Sector 9.

Meanwhile, the estimates for the first community parking lot to be started in Sector 19 have also been prepared. A surface parking would be started in the area to provide parking space for the residents.

As the lot would be in residential area, residents may be asked to help with its upkeep. No guidelines for this have, however, been finalised. The MC had earlier decided to set up another community parking lot in Sector 45, but the idea was later dropped.

UT Admn directs MC, J P Associates to minimise stench at Dadumajra plant

The UT Administration has issued directions to the Municipal Corporation as well as J P Associates, the company managing the garbage processing plant in Dadumajra, on steps needed to be taken to contain the foul smell emanating from the plant. The directions have been issued following an interim report by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee. Both have been given 15 days to act on the missive and report back.

J P Associates has been told to segregate carcasses from the garbage and hand them over to the MC for disposal. Vegetable waste should also be handed over to the MC for preparing compost, the Administration has said, besides directing the company to use inoculants on a daily basis to minimise the stench.

The company has been asked to explore the possibility of converting the present furnace at the plant into fluidised bed furnace, as recommended by the CPCC. It has to, also, submit a detailed design and specifications of the hot air generator and rotary dryer to the CPCC within seven days.

The directions further say that the civic body shall use bags of a specific colour, different from those meant for bio-medical waste, for collection of meat waste from different parts of the city. These should be transported in a separate vehicle and sent to the bio-methanation plant at the slaughter house for further processing.

Lack of staff affecting road repair: Corporation

KOCHI: Lack of adequate number of employees and hesitation on the part of approved contractors had affected planning and supervision of work related to maintenance of city roads, the Kochi Corporation submitted before the High Court on Tuesday. This was revealed in the Action Taken Report submitted by the civic body as per the direction by the High Court on the basis of a petition filed by C P Ajith Kumar regarding the pathetic condition of roads. It was submitted before the court that the posts of 10 overseers, six assistant engineers out of the sanctioned 14, and one assistant executive engineers out of the sanctioned six, were lying vacant and this had affected planning and supervision of work.

However, repair work on around 700-km of road under the jurisdiction of the Corporation has been completed. “Most of the roads were re-tarred during February to April- 2009. But the roads again got damaged due to certain reasons.

“Heavy rain immediately after the tarring work, heavy traffic, leakage of KWA waterlines, unauthorised road cutting for laying cables and pipes, high water table, heavy loaded vehicles, lack of curing time due to heavy traffic and intervention of traffic police are some of the major reasons for this,” the report said.

The report said that though the civic body had taken steps for patchwork, the work was obstructed owing to many reasons. “The traffic police stopped work several times in a day when there were long queues of vehicles. “Further, the Corporation contractors are reluctant to participate in the tendering process because tender excess is not permitted for Corporation work,” the report said. Only 3 percent of approved Corporation contractors had taken up the road tarring work as it involves huge investment. Earlier, the government had allotted vehicle tax compensation in proportion to the length of the road owned by the Corporation.

This has been stopped and funds allotted under Road Maintenance Grant is not in proportion to the length of the road. The Corporation needs Rs 40 crore a year for maintenance of roads but only Rs 5 crore is allotted, the report said.
