Officials assure arrangements for celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, Ramzan in the right spirit


HYDERABAD: More men and machinery are being deployed in the twin cities to keep it clean during the current twin festivals season of Ganesh and Ramzan. Special focus was on keeping the surroundings of each and every Ganesh mandap as well as mosques free of garbage, said GHMC Commissioner S.P. Singh.

Mr. Singh, along with Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao and senior colleagues, went round the Ganesh immersion procession route on Tuesday night for about four hours to check for themselves the current state of affairs and steps that need to be taken to ensure pothole-free roads as well as good illumination throughout.

They started the tour from the DCP office (East Zone) and traversed through Moosaram Bagh crossroads to Gaddiannaram, Saroornagar, Sankishwar Bazar, IS Sadan, Falaknuma, Nagulachinta, Charminar, Moosabowli, Puranapool, Tappachabutra, Durbar Maisamma Temple, Sarada Nagar, Asif Nagar crossroads, Malakunta via Seetharambagh, M.J. Market, Abids, Liberty, Ambedkar Statue, Tank Bund, and NTR Marg.

Road cutting

Road cutting done by water board for sewerage lines in the old city near Falaknuma and Hussaini Alam road was also inspected and work is to be expedited.

The officials assured citizens that elaborate arrangements were being put in place for celebrating both the festivals in the right spirit.

GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Sk. Aleem Basha informed that two medical and health camps would be organised at the Tank Bund and the NTR Marg on the ninth day of Ganesh immersion (September 3). Doctors and paramedical staff have been deployed to work round the clock, he said.

Immersion of idols

Ganesh idols immersion is expected to begin from the third, fifth, seventh and ninth days respectively.

Additional Commissioner of Police T. Krishnam Raju, Municipal Zonal Commissioners Bala Subramanyam Reddy, Anuradha, Chief Engineer and other officials attended.

HYDERABAD: In order to clear the additional garbage during the Ganesh and Ramzan festivals in the Greater Hyderabad limits, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up a month-long special sanitation drive by employing sweeping units in different circles.

As against the lifting of garbage once in a day, it is going to be twice a day in eight circles of GHMC for next one month, GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation), Aleem Basha told Expresso.

Additional sweeping units are being pressed into service in corporation circles of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18.

Each sweeping unit will consist of a tipper, sweeping unit members consisting of 19 workers.

Sufficient quantity of lime and bleaching powder is being stored and will be used as per the requirement. Out of the 2,580 garbage bins, about 900 bins filled with garbage will be lifted twice daily, he said.

A day after the idol immersion, i.e September 4, the GHMC on NTR Marg side and Tank Bund side will press as many as 40 mini tippers, six big tippers (20 tonne capacity vehicles), six front and loaders, 20 small sweeping machines and six big sweeping machines to clear the generated garbage including the iron scrap on the same day.

Hundreds of small and medium Ganesh mandapams are likely to immerse their idols on the third, fifth, seventh and ninth days respectively. GHMC will press additional manpower and vehicles to transport idol material and generated garbage from NTR Marg and Tank Bund sites. Four Front and Loaders and eight 10-tonner vehicles will be utilised, he said.

‘Rainwater harvesting a must'

BANGALORE: Rainwater harvesting is a prerequisite to meet the growing water needs of the urban cities, observed U R Rao, former chairman of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium premises on Tuesday .

After inaugurating the planetarium’s rainwater harvesting project here on Tuesday, Rao said that in all the major cities in the world, 60 per cent of their water needs is met by recycled water .

He did some number crunching on the occasion too. “The current urban and rural population ratio of the country is 35:65 and around 70 per cent of the growth has been seen in urban population .

Right now, there are 400 million people who are living in the urban areas and in the coming future it would be a great challenge to meet their water needs.” The rain water harvesting project at planetarium is estimated to cost around Rs 11.62 lakh and plans to harvest around 30.16 lakh litre rainwater annually. The project is being supported by Bangalore Association for Science Education, Technology Informatics Design Endeavour and other Charity partners ADOBE and CAF.
