Temple town under water

Aug. 17: With more than 48 hours of heavy downpour, several low-lying areas in the downhill pilgrim town were water logged. Some places had water five feet deep.

The municipal commissioner, Mr P. Mohan Reddy, accompanied by the health officials rushed to the localities to oversee the clearance works.

Two primary schools and one high school in Sivajyothy Nagar and Thumbuvanigunta areas were submerged in five-feet deep water. The school records, kept in the cupboards, were completely damaged. Furniture and utilities worth about Rs 2 lakh, including fans, electronic goods, books and stationary were also soaked.
Meanwhile, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) will hold a five-day Kareeri Ishti programme to invoke Lord Varuna for copious rains in the state between August 19 to 23. This special ceremony will be performed at Parveta Mandapam in Tirumala. Ritvicks and Veda pandits would participate in the programme in large numbers.

Committee to inspect 23 sites at Gaurikaluve
Chikmagalur:

A four-member inspection committee comprising Town Municipal Council members will be set up to inspect 23 sites at Gaurikaluve extension in the city. The decision was taken during the general body meeting of Town Municipal Council held here on Monday.
The meeting was held under the presidentship of H D Thammaiah. During the meeting the issue of Gaurikaluve extension was taken up and members sought explanation with regard to the next step in this direction.

Member Leela said that the people working in Town Municipal Council have managed to get about six sites in the extension using different names. She asked if it was not the lapse on the part of the council to allow such things to happen.

“There is a racket functioning behind this, which gets sites and sells it. There is a need to probe into the issue to expose the truth behind this. Evict the land encroached by rich people and provide title deeds to the lands on which poor have been dwelling,” she said.
Thammaiah said that action will be taken against those who do not have proper documents. He promised to expose the truth behind this and said that a four member inspection committee will be set up at the earliest.

Informing the house about the under ground drainage system being laid in the city at a cost of Rs 45 crore, officials said that Council must provide 36 acre land to build tank.
President said that 36 acre land has been identified at Hiremagalur railway line. All members’ meeting will be convened at the earliest and the land will be acquired by paying good price.

Sridhar Ural said that waste disposal is not being undertaken effectively in wards newly included to the Council for the past 15 days.

Member Sridhar Ural raised objection to the fact that Rs 4 lakh has been provided to Nirmiti Kendra to continue the community hall works at Gavanahalli, despite the fact that the works already completed are of sub standard quality. He warned of a protest if the work is handed over to Nirmiti Kendra. However responding to the same, President said that the responsibility of supervision of the works undertaken by Nirmiti Kendra will be given to Town Municipal Council Engineer.

Speaking on swine flu, Devi Prasad said that authorities concerned must provide adequate information about the disease to the members.

Responding to the issue, president said that hand bills will be printed and distributed to provide information on the same.

Nominated member Lakshmikanth urged the President to take steps to control the pigs straying on the streets. President said that the people who are rearing pigs have been directed to shift the pigs out of town.

'22 roads to be widened in City'
Mangalore, Aug 17:

''To provide basic infrsatructures in the city, 22 roads will be widened. Mangalore City Corporation has already undertaken the survey work in this regard,'' said MLA Yogish Bhat.
Speaking at the ninth annual meet of Central Market Merchants Association here on Sunday, he said the widening work of Mannagudde-Bunder road, Bunder-State Bank and Car Street road will be undertaken immediately.

The main roads in the city are being concertised at a cost of Rs 125 crore. In the second phase, footpath and drainages will be developed.

MCC special meet has decided to develop Bejai and Urwa market. About 48 cents land will be used to provide parking facility in Hampankatta, he added.

Shanghai model


Bhat said it has been decided to develop Mangalore city on the model of Shanghai in China in the next four years. A marine aquarium will be constructed at a cost of Rs 250 crore and an all season fishing jetty will be developed to give priority to export.

Ring road

It has been decided to lay 31 km ring road near Ullal bridge-Kulur bridge-Gurupra. In this regard, KSUIDFC and Coastal Development Authority will conduct a joint survey. It has been decided to construct a super speciality hospital complex at a cost of Rs 200 crore on Railway station road. The complex will have cancer treatment unit wherein treatment will be provided at 50 per cent concession for the poor patients. The government has decided to undertake the work on hospital, ring road on PPP model.

The MLA said that he has already held talks with the police to initiate measures to stop the hawkers in Central market area. Permanent solutions will be chalked out after Ganesh Chathurthi and Ramzan festival. Fish market and flower market will also be developed.

Deputy Mayor Rajani Dugganna, Central Market Merchants Association General Secretary Hamid Kandak, President K Shashidharan and others were present.
