Corp to get Rs 80 cr for waste management

KOCHI: In an attempt to save the face of Kochi Corporation which failed to implement many of the projects designed under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) due to financial constraints, the State Government has decided to grant Rs 80 crore for acquiring land for the augmentation of Brahmapuram Solid Waste Treatment Plant. Once the land acquisition is completed, the Kochi Corporation will be able to upgrade the Brahmapuram plant to cater to the demands of the evergrowing city.

Speaking at a press conference in Kochi on Friday, Mayor Mercy Williams said that the Corporation had already submitted a plan to set up an e-waste and plastic waste treatment plant at the Brahmapuram plant. “We appraised Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammedkutty of the problems faced by us in implementing various projects under the JNNURM, including the waste management projects. And the Minister, in consultation with Finance Minister Thomas Isaac, decided to allot Rs 80 crore for acquiring 45 acres of land adjacent to the 63 acres of land where the existing plant is located,’’ the Mayor said. Implementation of many of the projects under the JNNURM had to be set aside as there were no provision under the scheme for allotting funds for land acquisition.

“Now there will be 108 acres of land at Brahmapuram for setting up various projects for waste treatment. The 45-acres will be in the government’s possession and leased out to the Corporation. With this we will be able to ensure a comprehensive waste management project for the city,’’ she said.

Mishap at Metro work site

The Metro work site on Old Madras Road, where a part of the launching girder fell on the ground while being assembled.
BANGALORE: A BMTC bus that had broken down on Old Madras Road proved lucky for motorists there, as one of the cranes of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), carrying one of the parts of the launching girder fell on the road, in a mishap on Friday. The incident happened in the evening at around 4.30, near the Isolation Hospital while the launching girder was being carried for assembling at the Metro work site.

The crane’s glass cabin was broken. The crane driver Kulvinder Singh escaped unhurt.

An eyewitness said that a BMTC bus, which had broken-down near the Old Madras Road- 100 Feet Road junction had created a traffic jam.

“This resulted in one-way traffic and there was no movement of vehicles on that side of the road where the girder part fell. Thus motorists escaped being hurt,” the eyewitness said.

It is said that the ground on which the crane was moving was uneven and this resulted in the accident.

Speaking to Express, BMRCL public relations officer B L Yashvant Chavan, said that the incident was just a work hazard.

“The crane got tilted as the mud beneath it caved in suddenly,” he added. However, the public blamed BMRCL for not taking precautionary measures like barricading or covering the work site.

The committee chaired by district panchayat president Ambadi Venu withheld approval of some of the projects, which did not comply with the guidelines given by the government. The committee asked the local bodies to re-submit those projects with necessary changes. Development projects submitted by nine grama panchayats (Vallachira, Thiruvilwamala, Vallathol Nagar, Chelakkara, Edathuruthy, S. N. Puram, Perinjanam, Mathilakam and Kaipamangalam), four block panchayats (Kodungallur, Cherpu, Mathilakam, and Anthikkad) and two municipalities (Chalakkudy and Irinjalakkuda) were sanctioned by the DPC.

Of the total outlay of Rs.62.13 crore, around Rs.21.57 crore will be from the Plan fund and the rest from the local bodies’ own fund and beneficiary contributions. Some of the projects discussed by the committee in detail were regarding improvements in noon-meal scheme and providing transportation facilities for girl students belonging to the Scheduled Caste communities.

belonging the Scheduled Castes.

The committee observed that such schemes should be part of general education development projects and needed more discussion.
