Implement Cow Slaughter Act effectively, demands Vedike
Madikeri, DH News Service:

Karnataka Hindu Jagarana Vedike members handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister through district administration demanding effective implementation of Prohibition of Cow slaughter Act and steps to bring in Act to control religious conversion.

Vishwa Hindu Parishat General Secretary Chi Na Somesh in a news conference informed that though Amendment to Prohibition on cow slaughter Act 1962 and 1964 has been in force in the State, it has not been implemented effectively. Due to this, cattle are being slaughtered in large numbers. Further, large number of cattle are robbed and sent to slaughter houses in Kerala.

“Slaughtering of cattle was banned in Kodagu during British era itself but after the Act came into force, it was never implemented. Some police have joined hands with the people trafficking cattle and it is due to this reason that controlling trafficking of cattle is difficult,” he said.

As a first phase of struggle demanding formation of law against religious conversion, memorandum has been given to the CM through the district administration. On August 16, as a part of second phase of the struggle ‘satyagraha’ will be staged outside DC offices all over the state demanding the same.

One day hunger strike will be staged at all taluk centres all over the State as a part of third phase of struggle and finally on December 21, ‘Bangalore Chalo’ will be held. Vehicle rally will be held on December 19 and 20 from four centres in the State to Bangalore and a memorandum with over 5 lakh signatures will be handed over to the CM.

Water from Devadula gives cheers to ryots

Godavari water gushing into Bheemghanapuram lake in Warangal district.
WARANGAL: Farmers of Bheemghanapuram lake ayacut are a happy lot what with the Godavari water being pumped into the water body from Devadula irrigation project through a motor at the intake well.

Over 220 acres are being cultivated under the lake officially and more than 3,00 acres acres unofficially. The ryots of the ayacut have taken up cultivation of paddy following the pumping.

After filling the Bheemghanpuram lake, water will be diverted to the sump house in Pulukurthi in Atmakur mandal.

Finally, it would be pumped to Dharmasagar reservoir. The water will reach its final destination of Dharmasagar lake near the district headquarters in the next five days, according to the officials.

The lake has nearly 20 acres under its ayacut and Minister for Major Irrigation Ponnala Lakshmaiah has himself promised to provide irrigation to the area during Kharif.

However, the officials have not made any official declaration about providing water within the next five days. They have yet to decide whether the water pumped would be used for providing drinking water to Warangal city or for irrigation purposes.

They are unable to come to a conclusion in view of the low waterlevel of river Godavari.

The Devadula Engineering division officials said they would think of supplying water for irrigation purposes if there was a rise in the river-level.
