Awareness on recycling waste
Bangalore, DH News Service:

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in collaboration with Tetra Pak India Pvt Ltd on Wednesday, launched a project ‘Search’ (Sensitisation, Education and Awareness on Recycling for Cleaner Habitat) in the City.

The programme, which aims at achieving environmental sustainability, hopes to raise awareness of recycling amongst youth. The initiative involves 30 schools each in the National Capital Region (NCR), New Delhi and Bangalore.

Speaking about the initiative, Ranjana Saikia, Associate Director at TERI said, “We are constantly fighting the odds, and working hard towards sensitising people, especially young students, about the perils of environmental degradation. With Project Search, we are taking the message of waste recycling to 60 schools in Delhi and Bangalore, in partnership with Tetra Pak, which is world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Together with Tetra Pak, we will educate students about the problems related to waste, and the virtues of reusing, reducing and recycling.”
Experts say that a huge amount of waste is generated from households, schools, hospitals and factories everyday.

The primary factors affecting waste quantity and quality are population, urbanisation, industrialisation and the changing lifestyle. The programme was held to conduct awareness and sensitisation drives in schools in order to instill a habit of recycling amongst the youth.

Explaining about Tetra Pak’s involvement, Jaideep Gokhale of Tetra Pak India Pvt Ltd said, “Tetra Pak prides itself in being an environment conscious organisation and over the past few years has taken lead in creating environment awareness among people.
Project Search will be implemented over a span of nine months and would involve 30 schools each in Delhi-NCR and Bangalore.

MMRDA plans to tap Shai water for Thane

SHAHAPUR: Water woes for Thane and its suburbs may soon end according to the plans made by the MMRDA. The planning authority for the MMR has mega plans to construct a dam over the Shai River in Shahapur area to supply water that would suffice the requirement of the cities till 2021.

According to sources within the MMRDA, on the lines of the Master Plan for Mumbai that was drafted in 1994, a similar map for the neighbouring civic bodies like Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ambernath and Badlapur has been drafted by it. Initially, the Shai dam project was to be built by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) but it found the Rs 1,620-crore worth project financially unviable and then handed it over to the state for implementation. Later, a study on the possibility of constructing a permanent water source was undertaken in 2003 by a committee led by MMRDA to find future water sources for these areas coming under the MMR.

The plan is to execute the project in two phases. While the first part will encompass construction of the dam, the second will include development of related infrastructure like water treatment plants, pumping stations and develop transmission lines. Sources inform that while the dam construction will be undertaken by the irrigation department, other agencies like the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) will execute the second part. Once the project is underway, the MMRDA agencies will pump the water from the dam and then route it towards the respective civic bodies from the water treatment plant. The MMRDA would transport the filtered water till the boundaries of the respective civic bodies and then it would be the onus of the municipalities to deliver it to the local areas.

DT Dange, principal advisor, water supply resource management cell of the MMRDA confirmed the situation and informed that the project was still in the planning stage.

"Presently, we are working out the finer aspects of the project and will present the report in front of the Planning authority committee of the MMRDA for their approval. Once approved, the project will end the water problems being faced by the civic corporations and councils in the area," said Dange.

Speaking about the time span required for the completion, Dange informed that once approved, the land acquisitions and necessary approvals from the state forest department will have to be undertaken before starting work.

Rain gauges to be installed in all municipal zones

SURAT: With a view to facilitate decentralized monitoring of rain, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has installed rain gauges in all seven municipal zones in the city. These instruments, which provide an update on rainfall data every 15 minutes, have proved effective in planning the rescue and relief operations in the low-lying areas hit by the heavy rainfall.

Sources said SMC was the first in the state to install rain gauges in Katargam and Mora Bhagal areas some four years ago. After the success of the rain monitoring devices, the authorities decided to cover all the seven municipal zones with the rain monitoring system this year.

"This instrument has facilitated the SMC to gauge the amount of rain in each zones, thus, helping us to take the necessary steps to avoid the damage caused by heavy rainfall in certain areas," said G M Kothwala, chief fire officer (CFO).

According to Kothwala, Pandesara and Mughalsarai area received the maximum of eight and nine inches rainfall respectively on Thursday. However, the rescue teams were deployed in the low-lying Pandesara area to rescue the slum dwellers residing near the Bhedwad creek that was flowing below the danger level.

Rain gauges have been installed on the rooftops of ward offices at Kapodara, Morabhagal, Katargam, Pandesara, Dumbhal, Majura Gate and at SMC's headquarters in Mughalsarai. All the instruments are manual and that the data is updated at every 15 minutes by the trained staff.

Sources said that the Met department has also started taking information from the SMC about the rainfall in different parts of the city.
