MCC asks people to take steps against spread of diseases

Keep the houses and the surrounding areas clean, citizens told

Public awareness about various diseases is said to be low

Corporation officials to visit houses and suggest people on ways to prevent diseases from spreading

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has appealed to the people to take precautionary measures in their areas against diseases such as Malaria, dengue, chickungunya and filaria.

A press release from Tilak Raj, president of the standing committee for health, education and social justice of the corporation, said accumulation of water in open containers or pits could lead to spread of these diseases. A reality check on Sunday revealed that public awareness about this phenomenon was low in the city.

The warning assumes significance in the wake of malaria deaths being reported in Mangalore and surrounding areas every year.

Dakshina Kannada was one of the major centres to have recorded outbreak of chikungunya in the last two years. Many people in the region have suffered from filarial attack.

The corporation’s Health Department has, in a press release, requested the people to ensure that there is no accumulation of water in waste tyres thrown in and around their houses, unused tins, buckets, or plastic containers, coconut shells, and ice-cream cups, among others.

On Sunday, this reporter could see empty coconut shells filled with rainwater in a vacant site at Urwa, and near a tender coconut vendor’s shop at Marnamikatte in Jeppu, suggesting that awareness about the issue is still low in the city. At Urwa Market, a kilometre away from the office of the corporation, a tyre placed vertically near a vulcanising unit was filled with rainwater. The city received heavy rains on Saturday night.

The press statement said that the staff of the Health Department of the corporation would be visiting every house in the city and creating awareness on how to take precautionary and curative measures against the spreading of these diseases. The department has requested the citizens to cooperate with the staff members visiting their houses

Focus on redress of grievances, says GVMC Commissioner

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Officials should act on redress of grievances solving the problem rather than endorsing it to some other department, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner B.Sridhar has said. If any complaints could not be redressed, it should be informed to the complainants rather than making them make repeated trips to the municipal office, he told officials at a meeting on the grievances received in the last two weeks.

As many as 112 grievances were received during the period and 54 redressed. Every Monday is Grievances Day.

Mr. Sridhar made it clear that enquiry by phone would be made to ascertain the veracity of redress. He insisted that assistant commissioners should hold Grievances Day at the zone-level enabling people living in those areas lodge complaints and saving them time and money.

Display boards

The respective offices should display boards stating that Monday is Grievance Day.

Of the 47 grievances received by the Town Planning wing, 44 were redressed, Chief City Planner G.V. Raghu said. Chief Medical Officer (Health) D. Abbulu informed that 10 complaints were redressed.

Mr.Sridhar directed officials to prepare a monsoon action plan assigning duties to the staff in case of flooding and other untoward incidents.

A Cyclone Mitigation Committee should be formed. A map of areas facing inundation from storm water drains should be readied.

Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy participated.

De-silting of stormwater drains should be given priority, officials told

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Removal of encroachments and de-silting of stormwater drains should be given top priority to prevent flooding in the rainy season, Municipal Commissioner B.Sridhar said. Directing officials to aim measures at sparing the hardship of flooding for people, he said action would be taken if anyone was negligent.

The Commissioner went on an inspection of Chakaligedda from KRM Colony to MVP Colony on Saturday. Three machines should be deployed for Chakaligedda so that work at other places like Poorna Market, One Town and Prasad Gardens areas was not affected, he said.

He instructed officials that lorries of a seller of building materials at Isukathota be seized for allegedly violating rules. Girders should be built on either side of the road. Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy, Chief City Planner G.V. Raghu and Chief Medical Officer (Health) D. Abbulu participated.
