Garbage removal to be completed in a few days

Work hit following stand-off between Corpn., contractor

The health standing committee of the Kochi Corporation will meet on April 10 to discuss the issue of garbage clearance.

Though the clearing of refuse from city streets has resumed, it may take a few more days to clear the backlog. Heaps of garbage could be seen piled up in different parts of the city following a stand-off between the Corporation and the contractor engaged for the job. The crisis was resolved after the Corporation re-engaged the contractor for collecting garbage on a temporary basis.

“The backlog will be cleared in a couple of days as garbage generated over the past 10 days is there on the streets,” said V.K. Minimol, health standing committee chairperson.

The collection and transportation of waste came to a standstill in the city after the Corporation withheld payments due to the contractor following an objection raised by the auditors.

The auditors of the local fund department had questioned the practice followed by the Corporation from 2007 regarding the number of trips operated by vehicles transporting garbage from the city areas to the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, civic officials said.

e-tendering

After the auditors raised objections, the Corporation went in for e-tendering of the work. “As technical objections were raised regarding the tender conditions, the Corporation has decided to seek a legal opinion on the matter and a pre-audit report from the auditors,” said Ms. Minimol.

Teams conduct surprise checks, find rampant use of unstamped meat

Despite informing traders and the managements of hotels and restaurants to only use meat from the slaughter houses of GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation), it was found by the officials that the usage of unstamped meat was rampant.

The teams consisting of Deputy Commissioners, health and sanitation officials of the city’s civic body conducted surprise checks on hotels on Monday and found some kitchens in unhygienic condition. Besides, the officials also came across stale food that was ready to be served to the customers.

The erring hotel managements who were caught flouting rules were fined between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 40,000 besides seizing the premises of some of them. The Ohri’s Hotel in Banjara Hills was fined Rs. 5,000 for not using stamped meat and also for unhygienic kitchen conditions.

Sagar Hotel in Shapurnagar was seized because of the unhygienic conditions and also for procuring meat illegally.

Sohail Hotel In Nalgonda X Roads was fined Rs. 40,000 and Astoria Hotel in RTC X Roads was slapped with Rs. 20,000 fine. Minerva Grand Hotel in SD Road was also asked to cough up Rs. 10,000. Paradise Hotel in IS Sadan and Al Saba in Gachibowli were also asked to pay Rs. 20,000. In Gachibowli, Drunkyard Shivani bar was fined Rs. 10,000.

The officials once again warned the hotel managements and the traders to only buy stamped and healthy meat from the one of the five slaughter houses situated in the city and outskirts.

GVMC inches close to property tax target

Achieves 90% collection and expects to cross last year’s figure

With a day left for the financial year to end, GVMC has achieved more than 90 % of the property tax. It also expects to cross the last year’s collection.

Against a collectible demand of Rs. 208 crore, the collection till Thursday evening crossed Rs. 193 crore. The total realisation last year was Rs. 194 crore.

The earlier emphasis on pressing for payment towards the end of March has eased on two counts. One is levying interest on payment after three months for the half-year payment and an early bird incentive of 5 % for remitting the total year’s tax in the first month of the financial year.

With campaigns on the penalty provision, in December alone Rs. 40 crore was realised and the total collection crossed Rs.140 crore.

Secondly, demonetisation in November gave an unexpected opportunity. With taxes being accepted in old currency, more than Rs. 17 crore had been realised after demonetisation.

Sources say after demonetisation, all municipal corporations have been facing problems in tax collection and Visakhapatnam is one of the two that has done well, the other being Vijayawada.

Rise in collection

During the last two days, payments have touched Rs. 2 crore, official sources said. On the penultimate day, on Thursday, the remittances crossed Rs. 2.5 crore by evening. “We expect it to touch Rs. 3 crore-mark,” said an official of the revenue wing of GVMC. With more payments in the form of cheques, the exact collection will be known late in the evening.

The revenue realisation is expected to go up on the last day with the collection from Visakhapatnam Port Trust increasing, according to sources.

To help pay without hassles, GVMC has also introduced a pilot project of “Any EMI” for collection at the doorstep of assesses.

On the last day, Friday, counters at the GVMC Main Office and zone offices will work till 10 p.m. Besides payments will be accepted at all branches of IDBI, select branches of ICICI and “Mee Seva centres.”
