Snapshots of politicians and officers posing with brooms after October 2 appears to be paying off, with garbage collection by the municipal corporations going up by about 20 per cent in the past week.

Swachh Bharat Mission

With the launch of the Union Government’s Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, the three Bharatiya Janata Party-led corporations have ramped up their routine trash-lifting work.

According to officials, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s average daily garbage collection has gone up from 2,800 metric tonnes to 3,500 MT; the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s from 2,700 MT to 3,500 MT; and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s from 2,000 MT to 2,700 MT.

Increased monitoring

North Corporation Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta said on Tuesday that the cleanliness drive had increased monitoring of sanitation work, leading to better results.

“Senior officers have all been out in the field to check cleanliness. This has led to a pressure on workers to perform,” said the North Corporation Commissioner.

Officials said Zonal Deputy Commissioners had been empowered to hire additional manpower to make sure sweeping and garbage collection are carried out across the city.

Apart from garbage, the collection of silt from drains and construction debris has also increased in the past week.

SDMC spokesperson Mukesh Yadav said: “Empty plots and abandoned areas are being cleared of malba and the silt from drains is also being removed.”

In the South civic body’s four zones, the total solid waste (garbage, silt and malba) collection has gone up from 12,000 MT to 16,000 MT.

Mayor writes to political parties to discard flex boards

: Mayor Tony Chammany has written to political parties and religious organisations to join the campaign against use of flex boards.

Letters were written to the district leadership of CPI (M), Congress, BJP, CPI, Indian Union Muslim League, Kerala Congress and Janatha Dal urging them to abstain from using flex boards as publicity materials. Besides causing ecological damage, the indiscriminate use of publicity materials has been defacing the city. It should be through effective and quality actions not through flex boards that the messages of political parties and organisations should reach the masses, he said.

The Mayor has also written to socio-religious organisations like NSS, SNDP, KPMS, various churches and Muslim organisations and feeder organisations in this regard.

Though the civic body had been removing the unauthorised publicity materials regularly from the city, they resurface after short intervals. Kochi Corporation was duty bound to free the city from the negative cultural influence of flex boards, he said.

The flex sheets, which take long time to decompose, has been blocking canals and drains in the city, leading to water logging and related issues. The burning of flex boards and plastic materials will also cause severe health hazards. The State government has taken a bold decision to curb the use of such materials and the Kochi Corporation will support the State government in this initiative, the letter read.

2,500 permanent staff for urban development

Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake has said that the government will begin the process of recruiting 2,500 permanent employees to the department within three months.

Addressing a gathering at a meeting in Mangalore City Corporation office on Tuesday where he received petitions from people, he said 5,240 sanctioned posts in the department were lying vacant. Of them, the State Finance Department has approved recruitment for 2,500 posts of official and clerical cadre.

In addition, the Cabinet has approved to recruit 1,000 pourakarmikas (civic workers) on a permanent basis. Their recruitment process would also begin soon. By recruiting officials, clerks and pourakarmikas, the method of recruitment through contract and outsourcing would be phased out.

Title deeds

The Minister said the government would soon issue a circular in connection with granting title deeds to those who had built houses on government land within the jurisdiction of urban local bodies. Once owners of such houses got title deeds the urban local bodies would issue door numbers to them.

He said the Union government had held preliminary discussion with urban development Ministers of States in connection with selecting cities for its smart cities project. Criteria for selection included population, heritage tag and presence of ports. If they were taken into account, Mangalore, Udupi, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Bijapur, Mysore and Bangalore deserved to be included. List of cities from the State was yet to be finalised, he said.
