Goodshed Road Widened by 20 Feet

Commuters using Goodshed Road near Majestic may now face fewer traffic jams as BBMP has provided a free left turn by acquiring a nearby 20-ft property and widening the road.

Mayor B S Sathyanarayana posted the photographs of demolition of the property and widening of the road on Saturday night on his Facebook page.

Terming this as one of the ‘great achievements of Katte Sathya’, he posted: “Goodshed Road is one of the major roads in Bangalore which used to face too much traffic congestion from many years. The actual operation started from last September 2013 (the day I was sworn in as the Mayor) after several meetings. Finally, we have demolished a part of the building last night which will give nearly 70 per cent free traffic flow from south to west and north of Bangalore.”

It took three months for BBMP to convince land owners Subbaiah Shetty and sons to part with the property for a public cause, sources said.

Superintending Engineer  K T Nagaraj told Express, “BBMP gave transfer of development rights (TDR) to the owners which is 1.5 times the value of the property. As per the (property) owner’s demand, we have also included a condition in the agreement that the TDR will be increased as and when it is revised by the BBMP.”

The width of the road has now been increased by 6 metres. Subbaiah Shetty and sons were the legal rights holders of this open land. It was leased out to another person who had sub-leased it. Now, a private hotel is being operated from the property.

“In order to increase the road length, illegal hoardings had to be removed from the area. BBMP officials took police to the site and got them removed. Though there were some objections from the hotel owner, the police ensured that BBMP gets its job done peacefully,” Nagaraj added.

BBMP officials said the civic body is also in the process of taking over a piece of land belonging to the same owners where seven sheds have been put up.

“Apart from TDR to the land owners, compensation will be provided to occupants who have put up makeshift homes on the land,” he said.

Sathyanarayana noted that traffic bottlenecks in Majestic area will ease because of this road widening. “Initially, the land owners were not willing to part with the property at all. But we persuaded them. We did this keeping public interest in mind,” he said.

Officials Told to Take Up Dengue Control Measures

The Health Department has issued a circular to District Health Officers, District Surgeons, Taluk Health Officers  and Municipality Commissioners to take up measures to prevent dengue in all districts in the State.

They have been asked to specially focus on the areas which recorded more dengue cases last year.

According to the department, 6,408 cases of dengue were reported and 12 people died in 2013. The dengue cases increase due to summer and shortage of water supply. Water stocked water in open containers give rise to dengue larvae, sources in the department said.

Health Inspectors, gangmen, link workers will be briefed and the civic body has come up with booklets on dengue control measures. They will be given to each health worker.

BBMP Budget Not to Have New Projects

“We received only around Rs 1,000 crore, which is not at all sufficient. We need funds. This year, that is one of the main reasons the BBMP budget will focus on financial discipline. If we bring some change now, it will bring discipline in the coming years,” Shivaprasad said. | EPS

Bringing in financial discipline and completing ongoing works are likely to be some of the focus areas of the BBMP budget to be presented on Monday. For the first time, the ruling BJP is presenting the budget on time.

Speaking to Express, BBMP Standing Committee (Taxation and Finance) chairman M S Shivaprasad, who will be presenting the budget, said the budget size will be less compared to the previous years.

“In my budget, we are trying to bring financial discipline. We are taking some initiatives to mobilise more revenue,” he said.

A senior BBMP official said a high-rise building cell will be formed with a dedicated set of officials to target properties with tax liabilities of `1 crore and more, and collect dues and taxes from them. This will help BBMP get more revenue.

Dr Shivaprasad said they have allotted more funds for ongoing and spillover works.

“We announced projects in the previous years. Due to paucity of funds, we are yet to complete them. In this year’s budget, we have focused more on those works and allotted more funds to them. We are not taking up any new major projects this year. It will be meaningless if we keep on announcing new projects, and not have sufficient funds. Let us complete the works announced earlier,” he said.

Shivaprasad said the budget has given priority to health and will also focus on the environment.

He said he was disappointed with the Chief Minister’s state budget.

“We received only around `1,000 crore, which is not at all sufficient. We need funds. This year, that is one of the main reasons the BBMP budget will focus on financial discipline. If we bring some change now, it will bring discipline in the coming years,” Shivaprasad said.
