Corporation plans to develop ‘Schools of Excellence'

It has identified 10 schools to serve as model in every zone

The Chennai Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur, is one of the schools being considered for development into a ‘School of Excellence.'

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation has prepared a list of its schools that are likely to be developed into ‘Schools of Excellence'. They will serve as models for all Chennai Schools, run by the civic body.

List of schools

The 10 schools identified for consideration are Chennai Higher Secondary School, Appasamy Lane, Old Washermenpet; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Madhavaram High Road, Perambur; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Pulla Avenue, Shenoy Nagar; Chennai High School, V.P.Koil Street, Mylapore; Chennai Boys Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam; Chennai Higher Secondary School, Puliyur; Chennai Boys Higher Secondary School, Saidapet; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet; and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur.

Series of initiatives

The civic body had announced a series of initiatives in its budget for 2010-11 to revamp its schools. The initiative to set up a model school as a school of excellence in every zone was also part of it.

According to Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, all Chennai schools in a particular zone would try and emulate the model schools in all respects.

“We are looking at both hardware and software. While hardware includes aspects such as furniture, a uniform colour of paint, furniture labs and libraries, the software looks at aspects such as number of teacher and class strength,” he told The Hindu on Monday.

Modalities of admission

The model schools would admit students from kindergarten to class XII. The modalities of admission and ther parameters will be presented to the Corporation Council at its next meeting for approval, he said.
