Corporation school toppers honoured

TEAM SPIRIT:Madurai Corporation school students performing a cultural programme to mark the 64th Independence day celebrations on Sunday.

MADURAI: The 64th independence day celebrations, at the Madurai Corporation, were marked by presenting laptops to the Corporation school toppers who had secured high marks in the recently concluded plus two and tenth public examinations here on Sunday.

Mayor G. Thenmozhi, Deputy Mayor P. M. Mannan, Commissioner S. Sebastine, Deputy Commissioner K. Tharpagaraj, Chief Engineer Saktivelu, Public Relations Officer R. Baskaran among others participated on the occasion held at Anna Maligai.

In her address, Ms. Thenmozhi, who unfurled the national flag, listed out the various development works underway at Periyar bus stand, Maatuthavani integrated bus stand and other locations at a cost of over Rs two crore.

In a bid to ensure that mosquito menace was contained in prone areas, cleaning liquid and acids worth Rs 42 lakh were procured.

Similarly, many of the corporation run hospitals had received equipments to diagnose the patients to the value of Rs 75 lakh recently, she added.

The laptops were presented to the toppers and as many as 208 women beneficiaries received cash assistance of Rs 20,000 each under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammal scheme.

Students presented a variety entertainment which drew the attention of the audience.

Apart from senior officials, teachers, parents and students participated on the occasion.
