Libraries inaugurated at 67 schools

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday inaugurated libraries at 67 of its schools.

Speaking at the function organised at Chennai Higher Secondary School in Tondiarpet, Mayor M.Subramanian said

“The libraries would have a total of 1.7 lakh books and the facilities have been set up at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore. This includes the furniture for the library, which was procured at a cost of Rs.1.25 crore.

All the Chennai Schools would have 45 minutes of compulsory library period every week, he added. Each of the 67 Chennai School libraries has around 2,500 books which would benefit 59,000 students.

Mr.Subramanian stressed the need for optimum utilisation of the library period by all students. He added that the civic body was just emulating the efforts taken by the State government in promoting reading habit among students.

“The compulsory library period would be helpful in enriching general knowledge,” said G.Sivasankari, a plus two student of Chennai Higher Secondary School, Tondiarpet.
