Free bags for Corporation school students soon

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will soon distribute free school bags to 1.05 lakh students. Mayor M.Subramanian, who announced this at a preparatory session for students of class 10 on Tuesday, said that the bags have been procured at a cost of Rs.1.04 crore.
He also said that the civic body had planned to conducted motivational programmes for students of classes 10 and 12 from the next academic year on a regular basis. Mr.Subramanian said that career counselling would also be a part of the programmes.
He said that the number of students of Chennai Corporation schools taking the 10th public examinations has increased over the years. In 2006 there were 8,700 students. This number has gone up to 9,986 this year. He also said that the pass percentage in 10th and 12th had also improved considerably.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni urged students apply their minds while taking the examinations and read and understand the questions before attempting them.
IIT-Kanpur Chairman M. Anandakrishnan gave four points for students to remember.
They are: students must keep in mind the link between the subject and its practice in daily life; they must develop their skills; they should not concentrate only on one field and that they must try and aim for higher education outside the State.
Orator Suki Sivam asked students to speak in English and not be afraid to make mistakes. He asked teachers to simplify lessons so that students can understand easily.
Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax V. Nandakumar, said that education brought with it self realisation and self respect.
Director Institute of Human Resources Management T.K.Chandrasekaran said that while studying for their examinations students must take regular breaks, write down answers and see and revise.
