‘Donate books to 67 libraries of city schools’

CHENNAI: The corporation has invited donation of books to stock the 67 modern libraries inaugurated on Wednesday for students studying in high and higher secondary schools across the city.

Mayor M Subramanian told Express, “We have decided to accept books as donation for the libraries at civic body-run high and higher secondary schools from anyone, provided they meet the Education Department’s criteria.” The civic body has decided to stock 2,500 to 3,000 books at each of the libraries. The launch is the corporation’s attempt to match facilities at the private schools in the city that have a dedicated library and fixed library period for its students.

According to the Mayor, a separate library period of 45 minutes once in a week for students from sixth standard to class 12 in the civic body-run schools would also be introduced.

The corporation has spent about Rs 1.25 crore to develop infrastructure facilities for these libraries and bought about 13,000 new books at a cost of `six lakh.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday inaugurated libraries at 67 of its schools.

Speaking at the function organised at Chennai Higher Secondary School in Tondiarpet, Mayor M.Subramanian said

“The libraries would have a total of 1.7 lakh books and the facilities have been set up at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore. This includes the furniture for the library, which was procured at a cost of Rs.1.25 crore.

All the Chennai Schools would have 45 minutes of compulsory library period every week, he added. Each of the 67 Chennai School libraries has around 2,500 books which would benefit 59,000 students.

Mr.Subramanian stressed the need for optimum utilisation of the library period by all students. He added that the civic body was just emulating the efforts taken by the State government in promoting reading habit among students.

“The compulsory library period would be helpful in enriching general knowledge,” said G.Sivasankari, a plus two student of Chennai Higher Secondary School, Tondiarpet.

New schemes for Chennai school students

CHENNAI: Mayor M Subramanian on Monday launched two new schemes for the students of Corporation-run Chennai Schools.

Speaking to reporters after launching one of the schemes, bi-cycle shed for students in the civic body’s 24 Chennai Higher Secondary schools, at Kolathur here, Subramanian said, “Based on feedback from 13,000-odd public exam appearing students (class 10 and 12), who complained about difficulties in eating fruit breads supplied during evening special classes, Corporation has replaced it with nutritious biscuit packets.” To notch up the best performance by Chennai School students in public exams year after year, we have introduced several student-oriented schemes and the distribution of nutritious biscuit packets was also part of it, Subramanian said.

The civic body has spent about Rs 1.11 crore for developing bi-cycle sheds for students at 24 Chennai Higher Secondary schools located in its 10 zones, while the scheme to distribute biscuit packets to 13,000 students would cost the Corporation an additional Rs 49 lakhs per year.
