MADURAI: The SSLC results announced on Wednesday have seen a marginal decline in the pass percentage among Corporation Schools in the city.

A total of 2,698 students appeared for the examinations and 2,343 succeeded with an overall pass percentage of 87.

There was a marginal decline of two per cent as it stood at 89 per cent last year.

T. G. Vidhya of Ponmudiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School has scored 485 marks to become topper among the Corporation schools in the district.

Her score has made her poor parents to decide to educate her further and feed her ambition to become a doctor with hard work. “My father is a weaver and he rarely gets a job these days and so it was my elder brother who had to discontinue studies and help us. Keeping this in mind, I concentrated hard to perform well,” said an emotional Vidhya.

With no private tuition and special care, she was able to perform greatly.

Three schools Maraimalai Adigalar Corporation High School, Corporation High School, Anuppanadi and Masathiyar Corporation Girls High School in the city got 100 per cent results.

Maraimalai Adigalar and Anuppanadi Schools have secured cent per cent results after they came under the Madurai Corporation's effort to provide special training with boarding facilities to marginalised students, said S. Sebastine, Commissioner, Madurai Corporation.

Continue higher studies

Heads of Corporation Schools have plans to make sure that the students who passed out make it to higher studies without any hindrance and teachers would be counselling them in this regard, he said. For the 357 students who have failed, efforts are on to sort out grey areas and help them become successful in the next month's examinations.

Following the success of special coaching with boarding facilities in increasing the confidence of students, Mr. Sebastine said that plans were there to include the expenses incurred under special provision in the revised corporation budget and extend them to plus two students.

T.G.Vidhya was followed by I. Selvalakshmi of Kasturba Gandhi Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School with 483 marks and R. Monica of E.V.R. Nagammai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School and Leela (a) Ponmalar of Jai Gopal Garodia Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School shared third place with a score of 479 marks.

No tuitions

All the toppers wanted to become doctors and serve the society and none of them had opted for private tuitions.
