Coimbatore: Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra on Thursday inaugurated an evening study centre for poor children in and around Kamarajapuram area in Ward Number 49 at the Kenwyn Corporation School on Mettupalayam Road.

Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, West Zone Chairman, V.P. Selvaraj, Corporation Education and Park Committee Chairman R. Kalyanasundaram and members took part.

The study centre is basically aimed at providing an ideal ambience and opportunity for children from slums for their evening studies. Children on completion of school hours and facing shortage of facilities in their homes could make use of the study centre from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Objective

Mr. Mishra said that the objective of the study centre is to provide an opportunity for the poor children facing unfavourable conditions at homes.

The houses could be just one room without any extra space and there could be distractions and disturbances, hence the concept of evening study centres.

The Corporation is planning to have at least one study centre each in all its four zones.

The second centre is getting ready on Vincent Road in Ukkadam and would be inaugurated shortly.

There would be education supervisors to help the children. Corporation has provided a water doctor for pure drinking water, book shelf and dictionary in the centre.

Mr. Venkatachalam said that there would be energy-saving lights, fans, toilet and other facilities, all established at a cost of Rs. 3.60 lakh.

A parent said that three students were denied certificates by school headmaster

CHENNAI: Parents of students studying in Chennai Middle School (Urdu) at Korukkupet on Thursday sought the assistance of Chennai Corporation officials in getting the transfer certificates for their children.

A parent said that three students of the school, including his daughter, were denied certificates by the headmaster.

The school insisted that the children be admitted in Chennai Schools recommended by it.

However, Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said that the issue had been set right.

“We had only told our schools that they need not issue transfer certificates in cases where primary or middle school students wanted to join other Chennai Schools. Those wanting to move to other schools would be issued certificates.”
