BBMP contractors protest to demand pay

BANGALORE: R J Srinivas, President of the BBMP Contractors' Association, said they should be paid for the works they had done. He claimed that utilities owed more than Rs10,000 crore to the contractors for work done during last two years.

He said utilities such as BBMP, Bangalore Development Authority and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board had not paid their contractors. He said the BBMP had released Rs 230 crore only when the contractors had staged a protest a couple of months ago.

Srinivas claimed that certain officials in various departments were demanding 10 per cent of the bill amount to clear the dues. Also, he alleged that many utilities had brokers to speak to the contractors.

He said their primary demand was to get their dues and increase the amount of work they were undertaking. The contractors on Thursday will stage a protest near Mahatma Gandhi statue.

New Yoga centre

The BBMP opened a new Yoga centre in Rajajinagar on Wednesday. Law Minister S Sureshkumar inaugurated the event. He distributed cheques to four people belonging to SC/ST category. He said Yoga would help children adopt a healthy lifestyle. The centre will hold free Yoga classes from November 10 to 14. It will charge Rs150 for classes per month and have special batches for women.
