Coimbatore Corporation has begun the process of demolishing the old fish market near Ukkadam.

A release said that Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy, who visited the spot, ordered the demolition considering the poor strength of the market and the dangers it could pose to people. Based on his orders, Assistant Commissioner, South Zone, Durairaj, Executive Engineer Ganeshwaran, Assistant Executive Engineer Gnanavel and others were carrying out the demolition. The work started on Saturday and would be over by Sunday evening.

Only a couple of months ago, the Coimbatore Corporation constructed a new fish market and asked fishmongers to vacate the old market and move over to the new premises.
