Corporation stringent warning

ChennaiShops and business establishments that illegally drain sewer into storm water drains will be closed by the city corporation, mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy said on Tuesday. Replying to a query on the status of the pending storm water drain works in Chennai, Mr. Duraisamy said that the works were now gaining momentum and informed the councilors to look out for those polluting the storm water drains. The city is choking with filth due to the sewer inflow in to the storm water channels and such practice has to be curbed.
 
The mayor to another query on the metro rail tunneling near heritage sites said that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has asked the Chennai Metro Rail to provide specific data on the project progress while tunneling near the 16 heritage buildings that are on or near the Metro Rail alignment. But the monthly report in this regard is yet to be furnished to the Chennai Corporation and the issue will be taken up with the metro rail, he said.  The 16 heritage structures that are coming up along the metro rail route includes Ripon Building, Victoria Public Hall, Madras Law College, Chennai Central Railway Station, and Wesley Tamil Aalayam on Broadway.
 
Senior councillor Sukumar Babu demanded the corporation to construct more community centres in the city and wanted a huge community centre to be built in MMDA TNHB complex. The mayor said that the corporation maintain 846 toilets. Steps will be taken to maintain these facilities and will be serve public free of cost, Mr. Duraisamy added.
