Municipality identifies fresh plot of land for bus terminus

Staff Reporter

The Kancheepuram Municipality has identified a large plot of land on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway for the setting up of a bus terminus. The land is owned by a charitable trust.

A resolution to this effect, moved by chairman T. Mythili, was passed unanimously at a special meeting held here on Tuesday. Earlier, the council had adopted a resolution requesting the State government to facilitate transfer of 16 acres of land belonging to Sri Ekambaranathar temple, on the western border of the town, for the facility.

However, the proposal hit a roadblock since the HR & CE department suggested that the land could be taken on short-term lease or be acquired by the civic body at the prevailing market rate.

The civic body felt these proposals were unfeasible..

With the stalemate continuing for more than six months, the district administration directed the civic body to identify a new site.

It was thus that the civic body identified the chunk of land located at a distance of 1.50 km from the existing bus stand.
