“Efforts made for scientific closure of dumping sites”

R. Sivaraman

Efforts have been made for scientific closure of existing dumping sites in urban local bodies (ULB) across the State, said the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) in its report to the National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench which was hearing on a batch of applications relating to municipal solid waste management (MSWM).

The CMA also informed the Tribunal that the request for proposal (RFP) had been issued to private companies for appointment of consultants for preparation of detailed project reports for scientific closure of existing dumping sites in 10 urban local bodies. The local bodies included Tiruchi Municipal Corporation and municipalities of Cuddalore, Poonamallee, Tirupatthur-Jolarpet, Tiruvannamalai, Hosur, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Udagamandalam and Nagercoil.

An official of the CMA said such closure would be done by providing geo-synthetic liner, geo-text, high density polyethylene membrane, and later, a portion of the reclaimed land would be converted into a playground or park.

The remaining would be used for the purpose for setting up modern municipal solid waste management (MSWM) facility.

According to the report of the CMA, the Corporations and municipalities in the State generate 13,400 tonnes of solid municipal waste per day.
