Karur Collector pitches for rainwater harvesting

Staff Reporter

Jayandhi says it is in the interest of the future generations

Public must understand that the rainwater harvesting structure installation was in the interest of them and their generations. It was imperative that every household, commercial establishment, and public building must tap the available rainwater by incorporating harvest structures, District Collector S. Jayandhi said here on Thursday.

Speaking at a review meet on installing rainwater harvesting structure and compliance of norms, Ms. Jayandhi said that precious rainwater should be conserved in all possible manners by installing proper harvest structures.

For the review and sensitisation meet, owners, and managers of marriage halls, commercial establishments, educational institutions, and hospitals were invited.

Karur district had been experiencing scarcity of rain even during normal monsoon years. Groundwater was overexploited and the water table had been plummeting dangerously in the recent past. At a time when it was difficult to meet the demand of the public for adequate potable water, the Chief Minister’s special initiative for harnessing all available rainwater by installing suitable structures in all buildings came in handy for regenerating depleting groundwater resources, Ms. Jayandhi said.

Stating that the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board was ready to extend technical assistance to establish proper rainwater harvesting structures to willing institutions and individuals, the Collector urged the officials to popularise the utility of the scheme and drive home the message to ensure 100 per cent compliance. Karur district was witnessing the disturbing phenomenon of a steep drop in the yield from even deep borewells that were sunk for hundreds of feet beneath the surface of the earth. Installation of proper rainwater harvest structures would do a world of good for quick recharge of borewell levels and yields, she underlined.

While on one hand future buildings must posses rainwater harvesting structures for getting the mandatory approvals, on the other hand the TWAD Board was awarding prizes for the best rainwater harvesting structures established in buildings. She inaugurated an exhibition of models depicting proper rainwater harvest structures in buildings.

TWAD Board Executive Engineer Sivasankar, and Karur tahsildar Rajamanikkam were present.
