As heavy rains caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal lashed the city for three consecutive days, low-lying areas were inundated.

Velachery and its adjoining areas including Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Nanganallur, Dhandeeshwar Nagar and Brindhavan Nagar were among the ones flooded.

Except for the two arterial roads – the 100 ft Velachery Main Road and the 100 ft Velachery-Taramani Road, all the link roads were inundated and workers of Chennai Corporation and Metro Water had a tough time draining out the stagnated water till Monday morning, as the rains were incessant.

Sources from the Chennai Corporation said that they had to use earthmovers at several streets to level the ground. “We had separate teams at every ward. We are in the process of identifying problematic areas and deploying the manpower as per the requirement,” said an official.

“We also got calls from residents all over the city regarding waterlogging. They are being attended to on a case-by-case basis by local teams. Some requests for removal of debris in the storm water drains are also being attended to since morning,” he added.

Rajesh, a resident of Dhandeeshwar Nagar, complained that the officials did not respond to the calls made on Sunday night.  However, the official observed that it could be due to the lack of manpower and reiterated that all the complaints were being attended to.

Speaking to City Express, Radhika, a resident of Vel Nagar II Street said that the holidays were ruined because of the rains.

“But thanks to the reprieve on Sunday evening, we could celebrate Karthigai Deepam as usual,” she added.
