Corporation seeks powers to decide on banners

The Chennai Corporation adopted a resolution seeking the State to amend the acts and rules accordingly so as to empower the Corporation Commissioner to grant or deny permission to put up digital banners and placards, here on Friday.

The Chennai District Collector had written to the State recommending that the Corporation Commissioner be empowered to monitor and initiate legal proceedings to put up digital banners and placards without permission, since Corporation was better staffed than the district administration.

As per the recommendation, the State had ordered the Corporation to send a proposal for the same to make  the necessary amendments to the act. Subsequently, the Council adopted a resolution seeking amendments to the City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies licensing of Hoardings and Levy and collection of Advertisement Tax Rules, 2003 and Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies (permission for erection of digital banners and placards) Rules 2011. As per the proposal, the Corporation will be authorised to grant or deny permission for digital banners and placards in the areas, including the recently expanded Corporation limits while the State Government will be the appellate authority for the same.
