The City Municipal Corporation has decided to seek Rs. 78 crore under the Integrated Urban Development Mission (IUDM) for 2014-15 to re-lay 157.174 km tar-topped roads damaged due to underground drainage (UGD) system and laying of pipelines for the Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme work.

The UGD system was being implemented in 60 wards for a total length of 421.20 km. and pipelines have been laid for a total of 152 km. Also under the dedicated water supply scheme, pipelines have been laid for a length of 37.90 km of the total 40.27 km in the city.

Re-laying of tar-topped roads in a few areas where UGD works were completed was currently under way. But lack of funds has delayed re-laying of roads in many areas resulting in protest by the residents. Hence, the Corporation has prepared a detailed project for undertaking 378 road works in all the four zones for a total of 157.174 km. at a cost of Rs. 78.49 crore.

A total of 72 road works for a length of 31.37 km. are to be undertaken at Suramangalam Zone at a cost of Rs. 11.20 crore, 92 road works for a length of 43.19 km. at Hasthampatti Zone at a cost of Rs. 21.40 crore, 88 road works for a length of 37.78 km. at Ammapet Zone at a cost of Rs. 19.09 crore and 126 road works for a length of 44.82 km. at Kondalampatti Zone at a cost of Rs. 26.79 crore.

Corporation officials said that due to lack of funds with the civic body, it was decided to seek funds under the IUDM for the current year and a resolution was also passed in the council meeting held on Tuesday.

Officials added that the project would be forwarded to the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, Chennai and after obtaining funds, works would begin.
