Building sealed for flouting plan norms

As part of efforts to check unauthorized constructions, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Monday sealed a building at Ramnagar Extension in Madipakkam for violating various sections of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971.

CMDA said that the owner in plot numbers 922 and 923 had obtained planning permission from the Commissioner of Ullagaram Puzhuthivakkam Third Grade Municipality on June 16 for construction of stilt floor plus first floor and second floor for tailoring units in the contiguous plots.

However, he completed stilt plus two floors plus third floor (part) commercial building as a single block amalgamating the two plots for commercial purpose.

A stop work notice was issued on June 26 but the work continued. As the owner failed to comply with the notice, the entire building on Bazaar Road was locked and sealed for violating sections 56 and 57 of the 1971 Act.

As heavy rains caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal lashed the city for three consecutive days, low-lying areas were inundated.

Velachery and its adjoining areas including Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Nanganallur, Dhandeeshwar Nagar and Brindhavan Nagar were among the ones flooded.

Except for the two arterial roads – the 100 ft Velachery Main Road and the 100 ft Velachery-Taramani Road, all the link roads were inundated and workers of Chennai Corporation and Metro Water had a tough time draining out the stagnated water till Monday morning, as the rains were incessant.

Sources from the Chennai Corporation said that they had to use earthmovers at several streets to level the ground. “We had separate teams at every ward. We are in the process of identifying problematic areas and deploying the manpower as per the requirement,” said an official.

“We also got calls from residents all over the city regarding waterlogging. They are being attended to on a case-by-case basis by local teams. Some requests for removal of debris in the storm water drains are also being attended to since morning,” he added.

Rajesh, a resident of Dhandeeshwar Nagar, complained that the officials did not respond to the calls made on Sunday night.  However, the official observed that it could be due to the lack of manpower and reiterated that all the complaints were being attended to.

Speaking to City Express, Radhika, a resident of Vel Nagar II Street said that the holidays were ruined because of the rains.

“But thanks to the reprieve on Sunday evening, we could celebrate Karthigai Deepam as usual,” she added.

Notices served on unauthorised buildings

Staff Reporter

The Kodaikanal Municipality has started serving notices on unauthorised buildings within the municipal limit on Monday.

Presiding over a special meeting held at the RDO office to discuss follow-up action, Revenue Divisional Officer Ramasamy ordered demolition of unauthorised buildings, if the owners failed to respond to the notices.

When the municipal officials informed about shortage of staff, the RDO said the municipal officials should expedite the preparation of the list of unauthorised buildings.

The officials said they could not trace the addresses of the owners of many buildings to serve the notices. Mr.Ramsamy asked the VAO to find the addresses through spot verification.

Many buildings were constructed in Kodaikanal union without proper approval and electricity connections had been given, they alleged.

If the officials could not trace the owners of buildings under construction, the municipality could serve notices on the contractors and engineers who were engaged in the construction of such buildings.

The Collector had formed a 14-member committee led by the RDO to check illegal construction of buildings.
