Building violations: Madurai Corporation to move SC

The Madurai Corporation has decided to approach the Supreme Court and file cases against private buildings which have been constructed in complete violation of norms. Since some individuals whose buildings were sealed in the last few months have gone to the High Court and won the case, the Corporation authorities are now readying to move the Supreme Court on the issue.

Official sources said on Sunday that the Corporation Commissioner R.Nanthagopal has given concurrence to the town planning wing and legal team to pursue the building violation cases in Supreme Court.

As a first instance, the civic body is taking up the 11-storeyed hotel that is being built near the A.V.Bridge (Vaigai Vadakarai) issue to Supreme Court soon.

20 illegal motors used for drawing water seized in raids

As many as 20 electric motors used for drawing water illegally were seized in the past two days, during a series of raids conducted at various places in the city.

Even after summer, Vellore city continued to witness protests and road rokosin which most of the residents pointed out that the poor supply of water was due to the usage of electric motors in the adjacent areas, for stealing water.

Following this, as per the orders of the Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran, the officials of local body conducted raids on Thursday and Friday and seized 20 electric motors  for illegally drawing water.

Salem Mayor inspects works

Mayor S. Soundappan along with Commissioner M. Ashokan inspected the ongoing works being carried out in Ammapet Zone at a total cost of Rs. 9.26 crore. Construction of retaining wall is being carried out on Ananda Bridge, after which approach road would be laid on both the sides. The much-delayed Rs. 1.4-crore project has finally seen the light after compensations were paid to the land owners for the acquired land.

He also inspected construction of additional classroom in Indira Gandhi Corporation High School in Ammapet, drainage works in Ramanathapuram Odai, construction of overhead water tank for the Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme and other works in the zone.
