Corporation to prevent inflow of sewage into Big Tank

Staff Reporter

The Coimbatore Corporation will explore ways and means to prevent the inflow of sewage into the Big Tank.

According to sources in the civic body, following an interaction between representatives of organisations that cleaned the Big Tank and the Mayor S.M. Velusamy, the latter had asked officials to see how the sewage could be prevented from polluting the water in the Tank. One way it could be done was by diverting the sewage from Selvapuram and residential colonies north of the Tank to the underground sewerage system so that the sewage reached the sewage treatment plant at Ukkadam.

The sources said that the Corporation was also planing to remove encroachments along the Big Tank, fence the Tank bund, plant saplings on the bund, lay a footpath and create parking facilities. The Siruthuli had engaged a consultant to beautify the Big Tank.

The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday started removing illegal bus shelters that had cropped up along the city’s bus routes in recent months.

The work that commenced in all the zones followed an instruction given by the Corporation commissioner a few weeks ago to ensure the completion of the drive.

The operation gained significance after some officials and councillors were found promoting illegal bus shelters.

“We installed five shelters to help residents cope with the monsoon and summer. But the officials removed those bus shelters on Second Avenue and the 100 ft road without informing us. The officials should install modern bus shelters as soon as possible,” said Ku. Barani, councillor of ward 99 in Thirumangalam.

However, officials at the zonal level said the shelters were causing a loss of revenue. Many of the councillors were collecting Rs. 5,000 per bus shelter every month from advertisers, an official said.

“We will fix a board after removing such illegal shelters, warning councillors of criminal action. We have spared those shelters mired in legal wrangles as they can be removed only after a court order is passed,” said a zonal official.

All illegal bus shelters, estimated at over 200, are expected to be removed by Friday.

“They removed three bus shelters in Chintadripet. We have to request Corporation officials to commission modern bus shelters before the monsoon. Commuters should not suffer,” said Ali Khan Basheer, councillor of ward 63.

The Corporation had planned to commission modern bus shelters and entirely foot the bill for the facilities after deciding to shelve the public private partnership (PPP) mode. As part of its proposal to install 500 of the stainless steel shelters, the civic body had invited bids for their construction across the city.

After the civic body finds a solution to legal wrangles, the proposal for construction of modern bus shelters in more than 1, 000 bus stops under the second phase will be taken up.

Corporation to regulate auto stands

City to be classified into different zones depending on availability of space, requirement

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has convened a meeting with the autorickshaw drivers and drivers unions on Saturday to take forward its decision to streamline and regulate autorickshaw stands in the city.

The civic body proposes to classify the city into different zones and grant permission for autorickshaw stands depending on availability of space and public requirement.

Apart from eliciting the views of the drivers and unions on the issue at the meeting, the Corporation has also planned to distribute applications to drivers and unions separately to register themselves to operate from existing auto stands or the ones that are to be notified afresh. The Corporation plans to approve new stand in consultation with the police and transport departments. Specific number of vehicles will be permitted to operate from each stand.

The move comes in the wake of a recent directive of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to the Corporation to consider a representation from A.Thirupathy, district president, Tiruchi District DMDK Thozhilalargal Sangam, seeking a direction to the civic body to allow its members to operate from the auto stands in the city.

The Corporation in 1999 had approved and notified over 90 auto stands in the city, but several unapproved auto stands have come in the city over the years. Many of them have come to occupy vantage road spaces, posing a traffic hindrance. There have been allegations that some unions are demanding money to allow new autos from their stands at different rates depending on the location. Mr.Thirupathy, in his petition before the court, said some trade unions have occupied the parking areas (autorickshaw stands) and did not allow any new entrant.

The High Court in its order had directed the Corporation to consider and pass appropriate orders on the representation of Mr.Thirupathy within four weeks.

The Corporation has also invited suggestions and expected changes from auto drivers, unions and autorickshaw owners.

The views and suggestions can be handed over in person or sent to the Commissioner, Tiruchi Corporation, Bharathidasan Salai, Tiruchi, before July 19, Commissioner V.P.Thandapani said in a press release.
