Chennai Corporation on Wednesday identified 73 shops that violated the government order prohibiting slaughter of animals on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanthi.

Over 710 kg of meat was seized from stalls that refused to toe the line hours after having been warned by corporation officials.

Butchers in areas including Korukkupet and Villivakkam had objected to the action by Corporation officials who tried to stop them from selling meat products citing the order that prohibited slaughter of animals or sale of meat in the State on Mahavir Jayanthi, Thiruvalluvar day and Vallalar Memorial day.

Around 1,900 meat shops in Chennai Corporation limits remained closed on Wednesday as slaughterhouses in the city did not function.

Though slaughterhouses in areas such as Perambur, Saidapet and Villivakkam remained closed, a number of complaints were received from residents in areas such as Kodambakkam, Ambattur and Villivakkam.

The Chennai Corporation had warned butchers of action against carrying out business on Mahavir Jayanthi. “But many of the shopkeepers said they were not aware of the order of the government prohibiting the slaughter of animals and sale of meat on Mahavir Jayanthi,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

“We were asked to give warning to shops in the morning. We took action against shops that remained open one hour after the warning was issued,” the official said.

Corporation instructs contractors to speed up storm water drain packages

COIMBATORE: The city municipal corporation has instructed the JNNURM department to ensure the already executed storm water drain packages in the city are completed by the end of July. The civil contractors executing the work have been asked to construct culverts and connect the disjointed rain channels to facilitate the free flow of rain water before the rains. The civic body has also decided to focus on removal of debris and silt deposited in the storm water drains across the city in the coming days. This means that the corporation has to ensure that the 194 km of storm water drain is completed by July 31.

"We have reviewed the progress of the project and have decided to connect the disjointed channels on a priority basis. We will also complete the entire storm water drain work by the end of July," said G Latha, commissioner, Coimbatore municipal corporation.

The city municipal corporation is constructing storm water drains for a total length of 731.48 km in the old corporation area limits under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Presently, the civic body has completed construction of drains on a length of 537 km however, they still have to connect these channels to interconnect the drains in order to ensure no water logging in the particular localities.

"There are lot of areas in the city where the storm water drains have been left without connecting the channels at the corners. Residents in localities like Siddhapudur and areas like Lenin Nagar are facing lot of issues due to the collection of storm water in the drains," said A Nandhakumar, councillor ward no 52, Coimbatore municipal corporation.

The corporation has identified 110 spots where the interconnection of the completed drains are to be undertaken on a priority basis at the moment. The officials involved in the project claimed that culverts are to be constructed and the channels are to be joined at these spots. Overall, 1372 culverts have been identified in the total 731km project.

The stormwater drain project is being executed in seven separate packages across the old corporation limits. The corporation had covered 202km till July 2, 2012 and the remaining 335 km were laid since then during the past nine months. The corporation has completed only the fifth package and the remaining six are in various stages of completion.

Corpn. team of experts will study quality of work: Commissioner.

It had happened in the past and it happened again on Sunday – the concrete earth covering the underground drainage (UGD) slab on Nallampalayam Road in Ward 44 caved in. According to eyewitnesses, the earth caved in to form a crater when a lorry passed over it.

There have been such incidents in the past. And every time a crater was formed, it would remain there on the road for long until a resident or two would dump debris to fill the cavity. Or until Ward 44 Councillor Venthamarai Balu would arrange for some earth to be dumped at the spot.

Traffic hit

On Sunday evening, when the earth caved in, the lorry got stuck affecting the flow of traffic.

On Monday, following a complaint by residents that the quality of underground drainage work was poor, Commissioner G. Latha inspected the spot. Engineer in-charge of JNNURM works P. Ganeshwaran was also present.

She said that the Corporation would form a team of experts to study the quality of work and after it presented a report, the civic body would decide on the next course of action.

Nature of soil

Meanwhile, a representative of the contract agency executing the work said that the frequent caving in of the earth on the road was because of the loose nature of the soil. Plus, there seemed to be erosion of soil because of a leakage in the drinking water pipeline on the road.

He said that the company had not yet completed the work because it had to close the road for traffic. The Corporation was also digging the road for constructing storm water drains. Executing two works would only affect the residents. The company would soon start giving house service connections and while doing so it would work on strengthening the UGD pipeline. He also denied that the quality of work was poor.

The company was engaged in executing the second phase of the UGD work for Rs. 66 crore.
