AMBUR: An urban health centre focusing on maternal and child health care will soon come up at Ambur. The Ambur Municipality has identified a site and prepared an estimate for Rs. 15 lakh for establishing the centre.

According to officials of the municipality, the Department of Health and Family Welfare had decided to establish urban health centres at 60 municipalities with less than one lakh population. Accordingly, a Government Order (G.O.) was issued earlier this year identifying 60 municipalities out of the total 103 municipalities and sanctioned 60 urban health centres.

“Ambur Municipality is one among the identified municipalities for establishing an urban health centre. As per the G.O., the expenditure for infrastructure for the centre will be met with funds from the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), State Health Society, Tamil Nadu. Similarly, NRHM will give funds for providing doctor, pharmacist, lab technician, maternity assistant at the centre. Other expenditure in establishing the centre will be met with funds from the mission,” said a municipal official.

The local body has identified a vacant land measuring 1,500 square feet for the urban health centre on Asanampet Road, he said, adding, “An estimate of Rs. 15 lakh has been prepared for the building. The centre will have a minimum of five beds and its main purpose is to improve institutional deliveries, thereby avoiding home deliveries. It is purely for maternal and child healthcare.”

The centre would have a labour ward and primarily admit pregnant women for deliveries as in-patients. Family welfare services for women would also be available at the health centre. “Children, including boys aged below 12 years, will also be treated here. Out patient treatment will be provided here,” he added.
