Indiscriminate dumping of garbage, pig menace worries Vaniyambadi residents

VANIYAMBADI: A group of pigs straying on a vacant land, which has turned into garbage dump for nearby residential areas and shopkeepers, has become an eyesore for passers-by near the Vaniyambadi Bus Terminus.

Every day, several persons use the narrow pathway adjoining the land to reach the Vaniyambadi railway station from the bus terminus, forcing them to put up with the civic woe.

A few metres walk from the bus terminus leads to a large vacant land which is being used as a garbage dump for quite a while.

Filled with heaps of garbage, the land has become a haven for pigs.

“There are more than 30 pigs in this area. The stench from garbage, especially during rains, is unbearable. The local body removes the garbage every now and then, but people continue to dump waste here. With frequent showers, the area poses health risk for residents,” said Siva, a resident of Vaniyambadi.

The narrow pathway adjoining the land serves as a connecting stretch between the bus terminus and the railway station. Several residents use the lane to reach areas on the other side of the railway station.

“People indiscriminately dump garbage here. It gets filthy during the rains. Steps should be taken to stop dumping of garbage here as several persons, including children, have to cross this stretch,” a resident of Mulla Street said.

The land is also being used as a toilet. The garbage dumped on the land is seldom burnt leading to more inconvenience. Shopkeepers and staff of hotels in the surrounding area dump garbage here, another resident alleged.

Officials of the Vaniyambadi Municipality said that garbage from the land was removed two days ago. However, measures to control the pig menace should be taken.

“We cannot guard the land from being used as a garbage dump. We do not know if the land belongs to the Railway Department. If so, a fence could be erected around the area, sparing the pathway leading to the railway station. We have informed the higher authorities in the district administration about the pig menace,” an official said.
