Overflowing drains on Nethaji Road irk Deepavali shoppers

Needs attention: Overflowing sewers create inconvenience to shoppers on the busy Nethaji Road in Erode.

ERODE: People visiting the shops on the busy Nethaji Road in Erode town are greeted by nauseating smell as sewage overflows from a heavily clogged drainage and stagnates on the road. Nethaji road, which houses lot of textile showrooms and other shops, is witnessing heavy crowd for the last few days as people from various districts are pouring in the town for Deepavali shopping. “The overflowing sewage and stinking environment gives an unpleasant shopping experience to the people. The channel overflows for the past two days and the Erode Corporation officials are yet to take any effort to solve the problem,” shopkeepers charge.

The drainage channels in Nethaji road and those located in various other parts in the busy market area are heavily clogged as the Corporation workers are not carrying out cleaning on a regular basis. “Sanitary workers rarely turn up to take up cleaning,” shopkeepers complain.

The unmindful dumping of solid waste by a few commercial establishments is also a reason for the blockage of channels. “The civic administration does not take any action against the commercial establishments, which dump solid waste in the drains. Not even warning notices are served to them,” people allege. People appealed to the civic body to identify the commercial establishments which were dumping garbage in drains and initiate severe action against them. “Steps should be taken to carry out cleaning drains on a regular basis,” they demanded.
