Damage control: A Corporation earthmover engaged in removing water hyacinth on the Chinthamani drainage channel in the city on Tuesday.

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation took up a special drive to clear the weed growth and silt accumulation on the Chinthamani channel, a major drain of the city near the Chathram Bus Stand in the city on Tuesday.

The drive comes in the wake of the recent spell of rain and the heavy growth of water hyacinth on the channel that was impeding the water flow in the channel.

The channel along with the Kottai Vaical serve as a storm water drain for several areas in Thillai Nagar, Annamalai Nagar, Palakkarai, Thennur and Chinthamani areas.

Corporation Commissioner T.T.Balsamy said most of the drainage channels in the city have already been cleared of silt.

Road repair

Mr.Balsamy said the Corporation has also taken up temporary repair works on roads that have suffered damages due to the rain.

Only a few roads have suffered damages in the city and work was underway on repairing them immediately. Repairs on roads, which are to be relaid/strengthened under the Special Road Project 2010-11, would be executed by the respective contractors who have been awarded the works.

Work orders for the project, to be executed at a cost of Rs.25.19 crore, have already been issued, Mr.Balsamy said.

The contractors of roads covered under the project have been asked to carry out the temporary repairs, he added.
