Pallikarnai sewage pumping station to get new lease of life
The project to provide underground sewerage network in Pallikaranai is expected to be completed on schedule with the Chennai Corporation allotting alternative space for a sewage pumping station.
The council that met on Wednesday approved a resolution to allot a portion of land in the solid waste disposal site, measuring about 1,000 sq.m., at Pallikaranai. This alternative site was earmarked for constructing the sewage pumping station instead of the one near Veerathamman temple tank, Pallikaranai.
Officials of the Chennai Metrowater said that following residents’ protests in the neighbouring localities and technical hitches in building the pumping station at the spot, the water agency sought an alternative site.
The sewage pumping station in Pallikaranai would come up as part of the comprehensive drainage network taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. While work is in progress to construct three sewage pumping stations in Balaji Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar and Kamakoti Nagar, the fourth one was awaiting the allocation of space.
Of the 20,000 house service connections planned, about 6,400 connections have been provided so far. Sewer pipelines would be laid for a distance of 86 km covering 681 streets under the Rs.52.53 crore project.“We have completed the laying of pipeline in 120 streets and handed them over to the Corporation for re-laying of roads. We will be able to complete the project by February next year,” said an official.
