CHENNAI: Health Department officials of the Chennai Corporation on Saturday sealed a restaurant in a hotel in Koyambedu for letting out untreated sewage into the Cooum River and thereby causing a health hazard.

A Corporation release said that the action was taken on Hotel Shan Royal on the basis of complaints received from the public.

The officials also issued show cause notices under Section 44 of the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act and Section 279 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919.

Sewer connection

The hotel has been asked to immediately suspend letting out sewage into the river and get a sewer connection from the Chennai Metrowater before it can function.

Property tax dues

The hotel owes Rs.16 as property tax dues to the Corporation. Mayor M. Subramanian said that the civic body would continue to take action against such hotels that cause a health hazard.
