Mass cleaning programme conducted

SALEM: To mark the World Health Day, volunteers from Community Services Trust carried out a mass cleaning programme near Old Bus Stand and other areas here on Wednesday.
Hand bills
The volunteers conducted a signature campaign and distributed handbills on various health issues.
A team of women volunteers cleaned roadside parks in the city and later organised a seminar on World Health Day. The team insisted that no tree should be felled in Salem city for any development works.
Eco-friendly city
The city should be transformed into a clean and eco-friendly one.
Civic authorities must take stern action against those who burn garbage near trees, they said.
They also urged the authorities to maintain all roadside parks.
Tobacco products must be banned totally.
Plastic should be totally eradicated.
Those over-exploiting energy sources should be levied special taxes, the team members insisted.
Carbon emission
Local authorities must initiate steps to contain carbon emission within the city.
Various speakers, environmentalists and social workers also addressed the health seminar.
