Tiruchirapalli City Corporation will use gambusia, a fish species, “oil balls”, and abate solution as larvicides to check mosquito breeding in households and open places as part of its dengue prevention measures in the city.

While the fish will be let out in the open and abandoned wells, “oil balls” (a mixture of waste engine oil and saw dust packed in small gunny bags) which is said to act as an effective larvicide, would be used in open drains.

Abate solution, also a larvicide, will be applied in water tanks and sumps in households. This apart, anti-mosquito fogging would be intensified, Corporation Commissioner V.P. Thandapani told The Hindu .

The civic body kicked off a mass cleaning campaign to weed out mosquito breeding sources at households on Tuesday.

The corporation and other local bodies in the district were directed to take up the three-day simultaneous cleaning exercise by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan to prevent breeding of the dengue causing aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

In Tiruchi, the corporation staff and nursing students fanned out to various areas to remove discarded plastic cups, tyres, flower pots, and other containers where rainwater could stagnate and turn a breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

The exercise was flagged off by R. Manoharan, Chief Whip in the Legislative Assembly, A. Jaya, Mayor, and Mr. Thandapani in different parts of the city.

About 850 nursing students will join corporation workers to take up the door-to-door campaign and apply abate solutions in water tanks and sumps. They will distribute pamphlets detailing ways to prevent mosquito breeding in households and other dengue control measures.

Mr. Thandapani said the rapid exercise would cover 1.80 lakh households in the city. Four special teams have been formed in each of the four zones in the city and each team will cover 3,000 houses a day. Corporation trucks and private lorries have been deployed to collect the discarded containers and garbage removed during the campaign. On Tuesday, seven lorry loads of discarded containers were removed, Mr. Thandapani said.

The corporation has requested city residents to desist from storing fresh water in open containers. Drinking water containers should be cleaned once in two days.

Bus stands to have more toilets to prevent open defecation

Staff Reporter

In a measure to prevent open defecation, the Corporation is all set to construct four new toilets at a total cost of Rs. 80.40 lakh in bus stands and thickly populated areas.

The toilets are to come up on the New Bus Stand premises (ward 24), at Old Bus Stand (ward 16), Govinda Counder Thottam (ward 32) and at Valluvar Nagar (ward 50).

The toilets are to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 20.10 lakh each based on universal design. A total of Rs. 45 lakh was sanctioned through the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund 2013-14, Rs. 30 lakh from the State Fund 2013-14 and Rs. 5.40 lakh from the General Fund of the Corporation.

Officials said that though toilets existed in the two bus stands, open defecation continued at the entrance and hence toilets would be constructed there.

“The public gather in large numbers in the bus stands, but stink emanates from these places and pose health issues. Hence, the Corporation has decided to construct one toilet in each bus stand apart from the already existing ones,” they added.

The existing toilet in Valluvar Nagar, which is in a deplorable condition, would be demolished and a new toilet constructed.

The officials added that to prevent open defecation, residential areas were identified and toilets were being constructed.

Special Correspondent

At 6 a.m. on Monday, some parts of the city were buzzing with an unusual activity. A team of veterinarians and trained dog catchers was busy looking out for stray dogs to administer anti-rabies vaccine as part of ‘Mission Rabies’ project.

The mass campaign was launched in eight wards in Madurai Corporation with the support of UK-based World Veterinary Service (WVS), which has deployed its experts for monitoring the project.

The field staff were jubilant as they could administer free anti-rabies vaccination to 762 dogs on the first day of the campaign, which will continue till September 13, covering all the 100 wards.

“This is a pilot project taken up only in select places in the country. Our focus is now on Madurai. This campaign has evoked very good public response, and I could see it in the places I visited,” said Dr.Appupillai Murugan, senior veterinary coordinator, Mission Rabies–WVS.

Four teams were formed to vaccinate dogs in four zones of the Corporation. Mr.Murugan said he had briefed the District Collector and the Corporation Commissioner about the action plan.

Authorities are planning to cover at least 8,000 stray dogs and pet dogs under this mission.

R.Nanthagopal, Corporation Commissioner, inspected the vaccination drive in Santhi Nagar, Koodal Nagar, Thiruppalai, Kannanenthal, Swami Sannathi, Ismailpuram, Sourashtra School area, Madakulam and Palanganatham.

Officials said steps had been taken to ensure that the dogs suffered no pain and they were not subjected to cruelty, officials said.
