The Corporation will revive the PPP (public private partnership) model for commissioning 2,000 public toilets in the city. According to the new proposal, advertisements will also be permitted inside the toilets.

More space for advertisement will be offered to private entities to promote the project.

The Chennai Corporation is already on a mission to repair and renovate all damaged toilets following a survey of 905 toilets across the 15 zones in the city.

Work on restoration of 294 damaged toilets is underway.

All the damaged toilets are expected to be completely restored by August 15, using Corporation funds.

Despite the Salem Corporation procuring dumper bins at huge cost and placing them in each ward, some residents are least bothered about hygiene in their area and continue to dump garbage outside the bins and along roadsides.

Thus, cows and stray dogs feast on the heaps of garbage causing severe sanitation problem.

Foul smell

The garbage, which varies from household waste, plastic materials, corrugated boxes, coconut shells and other materials, also block the drains and the entire area stinks.

The situation is worse after people burn the dumped garbage around the bins to accommodate more.

Though the civic body claims that garbage is disposed of every day, the residents say that garbage is cleared once in three to five days depending upon the area.

They also complain that some residents dump all kinds of wastes and the delay in clearing garbage results in overflowing.

As bins are not placed in all the areas, the residents continue to dump the wastes at street corners or on vacant lands in most of the wards.

Time consuming

The Corporation officials say that removing the garbage scattered outside the dumper bins consumes time and hence all areas could not be covered as planned.

They told the residents not to dump building debris and branches of trees in the bins.

As part of the scheme to provide public convenience facility to the city’s residents, the Coimbatore Corporation plans to install and not construct 16 more toilets.

According to sources, the civic body will install and not construct the toilets because they are made of polyurethane sheets and are prefabricated.

The Corporation will have to buy and install them at the chosen location.

Of the 16 toilets, the Corporation will buy three immediately and install them near the Eachanari temple, Ukkadam Bus Stand and near the SITRA Junction on Avinashi Road.

It will install the remaining 13 as and when the manufacturer delivers them. And the locations they will be installed will be known later.

The sources say that the Corporation decided to go in for such toilets because the cost of construction is lower compared to those constructed using brick and cement, are easy to maintain, cannot be damaged or defaced and are user friendly.

The Coimbatore Corporation officials learnt about the toilets being used by the Tambaram Municipality, their efficiency and decided to have the same in the city.

The sources say that the toilets come with LED lights that are solar powered, physically challenged-friendly features, dust bin and all that are required for public convenience. In short, they will be environment friendly.

The 16 toilets are part of the 31 the State Government ordered the Corporation to construct across the city to bring down open defecation.

The sources say that the toilets will cost between Rs. 8 — 14 lakh depending on the size and facilities available.

Recently, the Coimbatore Corporation initiated measures to improve hygiene in the public convenience facilities across the city.

Toilets to be installed at Eachanari temple, Ukkadam Bus Stand and near SITRA Junction.
